Just my .02 here and others might give you a different answer....

You can certainly use an exacto in lieu of sandpaper, but I would avoid the contact solution. It can get gunked up in the sockets and create a bigger issue than what you started with, especially if the sockets havent been cleaned in awhile.

Alcohol and pipe cleaners works well. You will literally see the black crap on the pipe cleaner after the fact and it doesn't leave a residue.

I accidentally enter the thread and saw this. As monsterzero says, alcohol is fine. I always use high purity isopropyl alcohol and non abrasive material to clean pins and pipes, like cotton sticks for the pins and something like the pipe cleaner in the link. You will see how black it gets after cleaning. The remaining alcohol will evaporate minimizing the residue. The way he cleans in the video hurts me. I would die if he do that to my 300B tubes. The isopropyl alcohol is super safe to use on electronic circuits cleaning and so it will be for tube contacts.

5998 is one tube type that I never bought personally. Mostly, due to cost, but also some issues with them (very prone to arc-ing... :grimacing:)
I would recommend NOT starting there. Get other 6080, or 6AS7, or 6BX7 IMHO.
Also, AFAIK (my GOTL does not have that switch) - the 5998 switch is ONLY for 5998. all other tubes should be on the other position. having said that, Glenn has told me way back then that this switch is not very important, because you can use ALL tubes in either position. This switch is just a (small) optimization for 5998 tubes.
It adds 20mA of plate current to the output tube bias. Beneficial for the 5998, pushes the 6080/6AS7 very hard (100% dissipation).

Whoa, those are expensive. Try tubedepot @spanyam - much cheaper. 34 cents vs 59 cents each when buying 10 as the listing on ebay is for - trust me, if you become a hoarder, this cost will add up - and tubedepot gives bulk discounts the more you buy.

Here is link to their medium octal boxes for 6SN7 sizes - they have the other sizes too.

Awesome thank you! I suspect I may end up hoarding

I think this was the amp built right after @gibosi amp was built.

So this amp I believe will be 10 years old by the later months of this year.

The amp has been a rock to say the least. It has never failed me. @L0rdGwyn put some 6J5 sockets in the amp for me.

Hopefully it will keep on rockin' for many years to come.....probably at some point would have to replace the caps just because of old age.

I rarely plug my ZMF VC into anything else.

Hey guys, new here

Any opinions on this guy for a first timer GOTL?

https://www.head-fi.org/classifieds/glenn-otl.81215/
This one has quite a few upgrades: Lundahl transformer which was an additional up charge. Very high quality transformer which provides a smoother sound.

Solid state rectification means you get to save on rectifier tubes and can run the most demanding power tubes without worrying about the rectifier being able to handle the current. Glenn himself recommends the Lundahl transformer with solid state rectifier for best sound.

6x power tubes slots means you have the most options for power tube rolling either 2x 6336, 4x 6080/6AS7, or 6x 6BL7.

The 2x C3G slots are also an additional upgrade which lets you roll c3g drivers without the need for an adapter.
