I have recently bought a used pair of AKG Q701 for gaming.

I have spent some time listening to some music also and besides being a tad bass light for my liking and having a tad more extension in the treble than my preference this can really is a bang for the buck on the 2nd hand market.

It sounds crazy good thru the GOTL with the RCA powers and Ken Rad in the drivers seat.
The bass is much better than I anticipated when buying them.

These only came with a 10 ft. cord....which is about 4 feet longer than I would like.

As I've mentioned a few times around the forum, the K701+ GOTL is an amazing combo too!

For as old as the 701 is, it is pretty darn amazing

Tubes aren't like us bud. They get better with age. Well... until they die :)

Yeah. And the worst part is when the filament stops functioning properly. 🤣

The Q701 does have a detachable cable, I am not sure of the sonic differences as I have only heard the Q701

What is the difference between K701 and Q701?
There are minor tuning differences between all the variants (K701/Q701/K702/K712/K7XX). They were trying to respond to people wanting more of a bass shelf on the headphone, but each attempt to re-tune actually upset the overall balance of the headphone more and more. The K712 and the XX version has the most bass but also has the most uneven tonal balance with a huge upper mid peak that overpowers the increased bass. A lot of that comes from a change in pads, they switched to a high density memory foam that affected the tuning quite a bit. In ways that don't necessarily show up in the FR graph too. I think the original K701 is still the best sounding of all of them if you can tame the low treble peak that makes it so spicy with certain setups.

I own a K712 that replaced the K701 that my GOTL blew up years ago. I wish I had the K701 back because I've never been able to like the wonky tuning the K712 has. I did recently try an aftermarket earpad for them called the Yaxi pad that seems like it was an attempt to completely retune the headphone. It partially succeeds too. Kind of a lesson in showcasing just how much pads can change the sound of a headphone. I think they improve the tone quite a bit, but it also pulls the soundstage in a LOT which is one of the major selling points of this headphone so in the end it's give and take.

The K7 series take to OTL amps really well, and nobody seems to really know why either. On paper they wouldn't seem like a good fit. I used the K701 with my GOTL a lot before getting into planars (and before a shorted 5998 blew them up).

Well, the Airmid, as great as it is, doesn't have the magic that the GOTL did for the K701.
The Schiit Piety does a very good job with it, very 3d presentation, but it has a scooped out effect in the mids, unfortunately.

My V550 is still burning in, but initial impressions were not good with the k701

I suspect the difference in output impedance is the primary factor. The lower damping factor of a GOTL (depending on build spec) probably plumps up the bass and softens the sharp transient and impulse response the K7 is known for, taking the edge off the headphone which for many people is a positive change.

Keenan got the output impedance down pretty low in his design so the K7 probably responds to it more like it would to a transformer coupled amp.

Been a long time since we had any 300B talk on here. When I first got the amp a few years ago, I promised myself I would get the Taks and leave it at that. Promise broken - but I guess it’s not so bad to have a backup set of tubes? Purchased these Elrog ER300B from a very fine member @tdx on here.
