So far kinda frustrated. Need to hold the battery with my hand at the right angle to keep it charging. Now I know what else to be prepared for

Tried to position the battery into my old S3 with a weight but three hours later, I realized it didn't start charging. Kinda sad.

Don't need to fix the port right now if the charger I get comes. Just can't use it when battery is charging. File transfers are just fine with Bluetooth and my SD card despite the hassle. Only thing I can possibly think of right now that is limiting me is rooting.

I decided to upgrade my phont to Nougat as I felt my phone's use is pretty limited due to the battery thing. Went pretty smoothly, but I lost root. Can't root it unless I have a stable connection with a PC with Nougat. I thought that it would be fine, but I forgot I did two small things that made a difference: tap the time to open the clock app and hold the time displayed to open the calender app. No big deal, but really weird having to get rid of the muscle memory.

I'm also used to using the recent apps switcher as a menu button. Not sure if I can get that back without root but it should just take some time to reprogram my muscle memory.

My S3 still handles phone calls fine so no big problem. Just hope nobody calls me while I'm using it to charge my phone. :p

Aside from recently playing that QQ Speed game and browsing the internet (which I prefer using my iPhone anyways), I barely use this phone now that I think of it. Basically a fancy alarm clock haha. :D

Now I know a few new things to look for in future phones:

microSD card expansion slot, removable battery and some sort of wireless charging support, just in case the USB port is busted. Never thought I'll ever need them, but after this incident, they can be pretty handy!

Will check if this phone can still be fixed for free sometime this week. If not, I'll just let it pass for now. This phone isn't exactly the same as the original S5 so I don't feel like opening it myself.

The only guide I found ended up with a destroyed screen so not very comforting.
I wonder if you can still get this:

Wow Samsung released Nougat for the S5 Neo, nice! The regular S5 just got EoL’d on Marshmallow.

The Galaxy S5 and Neo aren’t repair friendly phones. Any work that needs to be done on the inside requires removal of the screen. It’s worse with the new J series; battery is sealed and the screen is even more difficult to remove without breaking because the metal housing provides no flexibility to shove pry tools in.

Yeah.

Watched a few teardown videos. Seems too risky for me, especially that screen. It's so thin and fragile...

Right now, I'll just use a wall charger. If I can't have any downtime with this phone, I might get another battery pack...or if cheap enough, just repair it if it's past warranty but costs under 50 dollars (highly doubt it's that cheap).

Never looked into Samsung's other series but user servicing is the only thing on the hardware side that has me going for Android devices. That's not a good sign for my friend who has a J series phone if he breaks it... :/

Old iPhone battery is dying but even that one seems easier to remove the screen so I might open it up someday.

Also updated previous post on Nougat.

I intentionally didn't update for about 3 to be 4 months just to wait for some feedback.

Nope. Not many people own the phone so no real user reports. I heard one claim that the camera is better. Gonna sleep now but really curious about that as the camera experience was terrible before.

The investigation continues!

Well I just ordered an Emisar D4, you get a LOT of flashlight for $40 these days... (those high CRI Nichia 219 emitters used to be $5-10 a pop waaaay back, and this baby has four with a direct drive mode)

3000 lumens from a 1x18650 light, wew (for like 20 seconds until thermal regulation steps in, it pulls like 40W on turbo)

It's funny that a light only 6mm (~1/4") longer than my old one has 7 times the battery capacity and 40 times the output...side switch lights are so compact.

Time for a relaxing evening of comparing 18650 discharge graphs. (god I love batteries)

iPhones have to be serviced by Apple’s own Geniuses, after all. Samsung couldn’t care less about repairability. AMOLED screens, especially curved ones, are cheapest if done by the manufacturer. Third-party repairers will always be expensive.

@deadlylover
I decided to get a RØDE mic!
Made in Australia.

You bobby dazzler!

There's a great interview/tutorial with the EEVblog and the former head designer of Rode on YouTube, about two hours worth of content.

I've settled on Samsung 18650-30Q cells, only $7 delivered woooo thank you vape nation! (The Panasonic fanboy in me really wanted the 18650GA's, but I sort of need the high current capability of the Sammies more)
Ehhh maybe I'll buy both.

I once bought a battery charger on Amazon, and now Amazon thinks I vape for sure and won't stop giving recommendation to vape stuff...

my mamazon front page right now. I didn't swap anything, just pure me by Mazon...

they have some very fancy and impressive algorithms I'm sure, but they haven't properly scanned my soul just yet because I can't remember one time where I saw those suggestions and thought "I nid dis! gimme!".
if they knew me they would tempt me with little crappy drones, magnets, glowing sticks, and animal balloons. not with soldering crap and irrelevant audio parts. I get those when I need them, and I know when I need them. but magnets and balloons, you can never have enough. come on Muzoon, treat me like a man! target me with toys and gizmos.

I had those stands before. Really do NOT recommend them, wobbly and flimsy. For not much more, you can get a nice solid Zaor stand.

my speakers are on yoga bricks. very good for decoupling karma. it was supposed to be a temporary lolilol solution for 10euro while I waited to get a mic and set things up properly, they've stayed like that for 2 years now.
there! those are stuff Namazton should suggest to me. if I end up having plenty of yoga bricks, I could make a little house in my house and then Godzilla the crap out of it. or pave the floor of the room with them in all colors. real cool practical stuff.

Ahaha!

For some reason, this video's intro was just too much. x3

Why does this remind me of something I saw a while ago...

That's a shame, I was gonna mention it but it appears to be quite different from the mainstream Galaxy S5, with fewer contact points inside the battery cover. I'm assuming the only two contact points found inside the S5 Neo are for wireless charging, so it's kinda stupid that you can't get anything that attaches there.

It doesn't look too bad at all

---------

As mentioned above, decided to upgrade to Nougat on my S5 Neo. Some people showed that nougat slowed down their phones, but the few reviews on the S5 Neo all claim that the phone runs faster despite the feature updates, so I gave it a try.

Finally Samsung got rid of their bloatware. The phone feels a bit more responsive and the UI makes the screen seem bigger. Not going to praise Samsung here because it doesn't fell like they extend The life of this phone. It just feels like the phone should have been like this when they shipped it, as the Marshmallow with TouchWiz combo it came with was very choppy at times. Can't test all of them but the stutters apps I most ormy bump into are gone. Was quite unhappy when I first used this phone as it does not seem like a flagship from a few years back, despite this being slightly weaker than the original S5.

For the most part, I like it. However, despite the ch it ppyness of TouchWiz, I was a big fan of the overall theme and design. I can't say the same for the new Samsung Experience on this phone.

Here's one of the few small things that makes the experience a bit frustrating:

Will get used to it quite fast. Just strange at first trying to find things all over the place. There is a search feature to help once I remember all the names, but I find having them grouped and organized with labels is better. This is a bit too minimalistic even for me.

By the way, love this new screenshot + scroll + draw feature!

Yeah, EoL'd me on the S5 indeed. Battery is meh but i only kinda need it while at work

I wonder if you can still get this:

Funny you talk about the S5. I had to resurrect it today from the dead as my secondary phone for work

Since this is the weeb thread: IMPORTANT!

Notice of Data Breach
FEBRUARY 28th, 2018

We are contacting you to notify you of a data breach which occurred between January 23rd, 2018 and February 26th, 2018 on online stores owned and operated by NIS America, Inc., including store.nisamerica.com and snkonlinestore.com. This data breach allowed an unauthorized party to access customer payment and address information for new credit card orders placed between these dates.

Our customers are our top priority, and it is our responsibility to provide a safe and secure environment for you to shop online with confidence. We would like to inform our customers of what happened as a result of this breach, the steps we have taken to resolve it, and what you can do to protect yourself.

Am I impacted by this?

Yes. Your personal information, including your payment information, may have been compromised.
Personal information, including payment information, was taken directly from new orders placed using a credit card between January 23rd, 2018 and February 26th, 2018. Orders placed using PayPal during this time period did not have their payment information or PayPal login information skimmed by this process. Orders placed before this time period were not impacted. Based on our information, we have determined that your information may have been affected by this.

What happened?

On the morning of February 26th, we became aware of a malicious process that had attached itself to our checkout page. This process was being used as far back as January 23rd, 2018 to skim personal information provided by our customers during checkout after they placed an order at our store.

After entering their billing, shipping, and payment information, the customer would be temporarily redirected to an offsite web page not owned or operated by NIS America, Inc. This malicious process would record the information provided by the customer during the checkout process, including credit card information, billing address, shipping address, and email address. Afterward, the malicious process would return the customer to the NIS America store page to complete their transaction.

Transactions conducted in this manner were still successfully completed on the NIS America store pages. However, the payment information recorded by the malicious process could be used for fraudulent charges in the future. Fraudulent payments could be attempted at any storefront that accepts credit card payments, not just NIS America, Inc. store pages.

What information was involved?

The skimming process had access to all information provided by the customer during checkout, including their name, address, credit card number, expiration date and CVV security code, and email address.

We do not collect Social Security numbers, and there is no evidence that any payment or billing information provided prior to January 23rd, 2018 was compromised.

What actions were taken as a result of this issue?

Once we became aware of this issue, we immediately took our store pages offline to prevent any further breaches. After taking our store pages offline, we scanned all our processes to determine the exact point of entry, as well as determine when this change occurred on our online stores. We have taken steps to solve the issue that resulted in this breach, along with several other steps to improve our site’s security.

What you can do to protect yourself:

-Check your bank or credit card statement for suspicious activity, or charges that you do not recognize. If you see any fraudulent or suspicious charges, please contact your bank or credit card’s fraud department. It is possible for any information gathered by this malicious process to be saved and used at a later date, so regularly checking your statements for unusual activity is the best way to ensure your card is not being misused.

-Contact your bank or credit card company to cancel cards you feel may be impacted by this issue, and request a new card. If you request a new card, please remember to update any automatic payments that may attempt to draw from the old card. If replacing a card, you will need to update preorders for future products provided by NIS America, Inc.’s online stores. For secure payment, we can send invoices via email directly from PayPal, which can be paid with or without a PayPal account. PayPal information was not breached during this event.

-Check your credit report for any anomalies. The Federal Trade Commission recommends http://www.annualcreditreport.com/ . Additionally, you can place a free, 90-day fraud alert with one of the three major credit bureaus and/or place a credit freeze on your file to restrict access to your credit report by other parties. For more information, please visit https://www.identitytheft.gov/Steps

-If you have a user account on one of NIS America, Inc.’s online stores, please know that we do not store payment information within these accounts. User accounts are used primarily to track past orders and gain reward points. Data for past orders is stored securely, and will only show the last four digits of a credit card, and will not show the CVV security code or expiration date. It is still recommended to change the password of any accounts you have with a store operated by NIS America, Inc.

-If you encounter any warning messages from your web browser that you may be proceeding to an unsafe page on our site or any other site, stop what you are doing and contact the site’s operators.

-Keep an eye out for fraudulent emails, texts, phone calls, or fake websites trying to get your personal information. Never give out private or personal information, including financial details, unless you can verify the identity of the person or organization contacting you. Don’t respond to texts or emails coming from a contact you don't recognize, and don’t click on any links they provide. Instead, if you need to check your account, type the site address you want to visit into your browser and securely log into your account.

-NIS America will never ask you for your personal information, payment information, or password via email, unless contacted to do so by our customers via our customer support channels. Updated payment information is only collected through PayPal, using either an invoice or direct payment.

We know that this issue and the steps needed to resolve it can be frustrating. We share these feelings, and we pledge to do our best to get this issue resolved, and prevent it from happening again. At this time, we can say that we have identified the issue, removed it from our website, and taken steps to prevent this issue from recurring, as well as added new security to our online stores. We would not be reopening our online stores if we did not feel confident that they are a safe place to shop.

We are committed to earning back your trust and confidence, and we hope to have the opportunity to serve you again soon. We will be sending out codes for a $5.00 discount on your next purchase from our online store to those impacted by this issue within the next few days. We understand that this is a small token, but we hope it will show our commitment and appreciation of our customers as we begin to regain your trust.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us and we would be happy to assist you in any way that we can. We can be reached anytime at storesupport@nisamerica.com.

We are determined to provide you with a safe and secure shopping experience going forward. We hope to see you on our online stores again soon.

Sincerely,

NISA Online Store team

Ah cool cool! I'll probably watch them when I get the time. I saw a couple minutes of them and they look interesting! I went to the NAMM show this year while attending AES sessions and one of them was about polar patterns of microphones. Fascinating stuff.

don't panic but there seem to be a masked ninja behind you.
D: How'd he get in mah room?

What made you decide to get a microphone?
Mostly for YouTube videos. The binaural mics I have don't reject any sound since they're omnidirectional mics, so they picked up all noises around me. I wanted a mic that was flat across the frequency response too. Most mics like from Shure or Audio Technica have presence boosts for bass and/or upper-midrange.
