Is this bad enough to be good? (I am trash and that's ok)

Lol, someone watches Gigguk as well haha

That's kinda what I'm asking too. :p

Saw this on Facebook. A generalization, yes, but quite funny. :p

That is indeed a very true thing.... I've always wondered about that and just shrugged

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/bjye8a/reddit-fake-porn-app-daisy-ridley
Well, if that ain't scary... and I don't mean (just) porn of celebrities that don't consent to it.

Sigh...another subreddit to subscribe to :p

There are some frightening - and disturbing - possibilities that can and will come from the use of face remapping. Hollywood has been doing it for years with films like Tron: Legacy, Rogue One, etc, but it's going to be a very different thing if the average person can do it easily with an app.
Yeah, with voice apps from Adobe that can (mostly) replicate a person (granting hours of pre recorded sound from them), real time facial mapping apps, and machine learning. We are getting into a point where authenticity can't be gauged soley from a video

Dang, that must be worth a fortune!

great for porn, and making fake videos to pretend like we go out and have friends. then you go steal your own house or store, and edit the video surveillance to show some dude you don't like. with crappy enough resolution maybe nobody will even think to question the vid, win/win. flying cars are for losers, that's the sort of technology the future needs.:ok_hand:

Top tip, if anyone needs a cheapo gaming rig then buy old workstations from the sandy/ivy bridge era and shove a graphics card inside (lower end stuff is generally untouched by miners, at least here anyway). I regularly see workstations for sale here where the "value" of the RAM is worth like 80% of the asking price, so you literally get a low end quad core + HT Xeon, crappy hard drive + 128/256 SSD, decent case, great PSU (usually Delta/Flex) and motherboard for like what, $100 if you had to buy new RAM for a build.

It utterly obliterates any cheap/value DIY build, even if you have to buy a second one for some reason.

I've even seen lower end optiplex's with 8GB of RAM go for like $150. 8GB of DDR3 costs $100 here....you get a whole computer and Windows license for $50, so just shove in a 1050 low profile and you're doneso. It's bonkers I tell you, bonkers.

The whole internet is going "oh noooo this is the worst time to build a computer" UGHH PLEASE CHILDREN, THIS IS THE BEEEEST TIME FOR A GAMING RIG, BUT NOT AN RGB DISCOTHEQUE INSTAGRAM/REDDIT TROPHY.

WAAAH WAAAH BUT BUT BUT BUILDING AN AM4 RIG IS FUUUUTURE PROOOOOF.

YEAH YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE IS FUTURE PROOF? FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS IN YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT OR IN A LOW FEE INDEX FUND THAT AVERAGES 7% A YEAR ON A LONG TIME FRAME, I RECOMMEND VANGUARD, THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED POST AND DOES NOT CONSTITUTE FINANCIAL ADVICE.

Even if the PSU is crap it's relatively inexpensive compared to the other parts.

That being said I'd check to see how spectre patches (and meltdown as a result) affect older arches because from what I remember there's actually significant performance decreases for old architectures. Probably depends on workload but may as well check.

If it's a build for somebody else who's kind of an average person then up to you if you want to care. They probably won't notice or care so you probably shouldn't care either.

"Why is Muinarc walking out of Head-Fi HQ with ten headphones? Why is he even in Michigan?"

I kid. Mui's so tall that not even flawless facial remapping could make me pass for him. "When did Mui drop down to 5'9"?"

Eyy he probably works here. He is carrying a clipboard and wearing a hard hat. Let him pass boys

I did this in College lol. Our school had public auctions on old equipment so I would mass buy workstations on the cheap, fix them up with a bit more RAM, clean Windows install (University free license), and a $100 gaming GPU. Boooom, 200%+ profit

It's a bit harder here than in AU to "easilly" find those deals you speak about. Especially if you aren't close to or know about a public university/instituation's auctions that would even include 'nicer' computers.

It seems the Dell XPS 15 9560 might use T5.5 screws, not T5 as they claim in their manuals.

Second time opening up the XPS. Very nervous and careful this time. Tried to apply as Lito pressure as possible to not strip the screws or the screwdriver. Still, second time I stripped a T5 screwdriver on this. :'(

Other people have the same issues, and multiple people claimed a T5.5 tip fits perfectly, as it should with these types of screws if you are using the right bit. The T5 screwdrivers I used never had a snug fit.

Have to be careful with my laptop now until I get a new screwdriver, as I can't really put the screws back in now. :frowning2:

My T4 is too small and T6 too big.

I was careful not to use too much pressure the last time I screwed the screws on. Not sure why they are so hard to remove but they won't budge so I fear consistently using T5 screwdrivers might strip the screws and prevent any way of opening them...

As I'm reading about my XPS issues, I'm still seeing people in discussions go "WHY YOU NO BUY THE i7 IT'S MORE FUTURE PROOF NO? EVEN THOUGH YOU JUST LISTED ALL THE CONS OF THE i7 IN AN ULTRABOOK WITH THERMAL/POWER DRAW ISSUES AND EVERY REASON WHY THE i7 VERSION IS NOT FOR YOU."

Usually from people who are planning to buy laptops with very little experience, yet somehow happen to have the authority to judge and congradulate others.

*Sigh*

(Okay, maybe I'm a lot like that too but still :cold_sweat:)

My good old HP Pavillon has a dual core hyperthreaded i5-3210m in it. These older CPUs are socketed and not soldered on. Despite mainly being used for laptops, some companies have made mini-itx boards for industrial use that are rock solid, but have dropped in price significantly. Most importantly, they use sodimm slots so I can directly use the ram from my laptop!

The ones that are guaranteed to have compatible BIOS' (quite a few boards from previous gens are pin compatible, but they may not necessarily support the CPU, so I wanna play it safe) are still kinda pricy but they will keep dropping in price.

Thinking of getting one someday, use the wifi card, ram, storage and cpu from my laptop to build a mini-itx build with some cheap low profile GPU I can scavenge. Even a 1060 can work fine for things that don't push the CPU too hard so it will be a great HTPC or some rendering PC to offload a bit of my work that exclusively use the GPU (if I decide to put something more powerful inside).

-----------------

Woops, 3 posts in a row!

I could go on a 4th post and share my recent teardown of said HP laptop. 5 years old and still going strong, though the keyboard isn't working properly.

Bonkers I tell you, bonkers. :stuck_out_tongue:

Waifu has shipped, I better start construction of a 180x60cm pillow.

I picked up some cheap $2.50 pillows from IKEA (along with some rechargeable batteries, as you do), and the filling is surprisingly decent, $2.50/410g of polyester fill isn't too bad at all.

Hmmm I really need to buy a cutting mat and a rotary cutter...plus minus 1cm tolerance measuring and cutting with scissors isn't quite enough for me at this stage. Still working on my sewing technique too.

Diamond's hair is very sparkly in the anime, I need some sort of contraption to make her hair shine on the pillow...which means I need ultra high powered RGB LEDs....inside a pillow...maybe not the safest thing in the world and perhaps not an ideal environment for power LEDs. (so I'll have to spread the heat load between a large array of LEDs to keep the junction temperatures down, which keeps efficiency up).
Another issue is that pillow stuffing is fairly opaque and acts like a very big diffuser, so it will be challenging to try and focus the light on her hair and not just have her whole upper torso light up like a Christmas tree....but maybe that's ok.

Time to hit Mouser.

There's those radioactive crystals that glow under uv light! Of course, if you don't plan on spending a fortune on those, you can just get something that looks interesting under uv light and have her shine in the night when you bed her for *COUGH* I'VE GONE TOO FAR *COUGH COUGH*!

Update:

Crisis averted!

I guess it really was an obscure T5.5 after all.

My T6 bit held onto it pretty snugly with a teeny bit of pressure, while my T5 bits clearly all had some wiggle room. Managed to remove and put back all 10 screws securely with it.

Here's some random teardown shots and component labels.
