Bought it this year, so def the new one. Less bass, less treble, based on my fading memories (treble) and written reports (bass). In other words, more neutral. I absolutely love them, in case it wasn't clear ;)

New Head-Fier
Pros: Build quality and materials are spot on.
SQ - masterful driver hand-offs
Cons: Left-right connectivity bugs.
Unobtanium for most folks
I'd also add a neutral component which is battery life. Short 5 hour plus for earbuds is below the class average, but counters with a case that adds more endurance than I've seen almost ever...

New Head-Fier
Pros: High-level passive noise cancellation
Elegant shell design
Next-generation BA bass with both quantity and quality
Vocals with a near-tangible sense of presence

@dhanners22 Yeah, the ultra-high frequencies of EST drivers are something special. I wonder if, in about five years, more midrange models will start incorporating them. I can't wait for that.

You paid $190 for it? I paid almost double that! I hate you! lol
Just kidding. I’m glad to see someone else enjoying this IEM too.
It seems like a great IEM that makes you want to talk about the amazing music you discover with it, rather than just analyze the sound it produces, right?:beerchug:

Argha

100+ Head-Fier
Pros: 1. Lower Midrange is extremely captivating & exudes a rich tonality
2. Mid-bass is very natural and reflects an analog nature in the tonality, which provides a good amount of thump to offer
3. Upper-mids are on the safer side, yet withhold a good amount of details & air
4. Resolution is on the higher side of things at this price point
5. One of the rare tonalities that can be found on a budget price-point
Cons: 1. Subbass lacks the authority
2. Treble is unrefined for the most part
3. Technicalities are not the strongest part
4. Driver Flex can be noticeable from tip to tip

@amanieux It is very long since I owned the DTE900, I let it go as the the upper mid energy got to much for me. I bet the DTE900 was more technical and energetic.

New Head-Fier
Pros: The most “balanced” and versatile sounding Monk Plus version!

Balanced sound signature while keeping the usual VE, vocal-forward character!

Noticeably the “best” Monk Plus version so far! (in terms of tonal and technical quality)

Firm, thick lows!

Smooth, yet decently detailed mids!

Non-fatiguing upper frequencies!

Decent technical performance for its price!

Very good fit and comfort! (subjective due to MX500’s different pairings with ear sizes)

Fairly easy to drive for a flathead earbud!

Still exhibits the same “bang for the buck” sound quality and scaling!
Cons: There aren’t any for its asking price that isn’t within the subjective category.

A pouch would be a good treat for everybody. (nitpick)

New Head-Fier

The Schraeer

Head-Fier
Pros: Unrivaled instrumental timbre
The most natural sound signature ever
Physicality of the sound
Full, complete sound with actual bass
Bass x2
Lushness, richness, absolute vocals delicacy
Off-the-charts non-existence of listening fatigue thanks to below zero distortion
Beyond the Sky scaling with source quality
Cons: Can be too warm and gooey for some
Risk of hearing damage due to zero distortion at high volumes - it just sounds good even when loud
Eyebrow-raising portrayal of synths - at times it feels like a very specific mixer filter applied
Not 100% capable with all genres, will keep trying it's best to portray them in it's own framework of sound
No compatibility with Stax gear, care must be taken to cable it properly
Some Stax combos have better pure sound resolution
Obvious astronomical price and extreme scarcity
34 years of age and counting - natural risks involved
Let’s start this with a few selected quotes from Head-Fi. No credits given nor any rights reserved for these.

ICYGENIUS

Head-Fier
Pros: A massive, fundamental bass - incredibly deep, powerful and resilient, with terrific texture and control. Perfect for bassheads.
Transparency and detail in the bass - bass is not just powerful, but also refined to the smallest nuances, without any hum or fuzz.
Clean, smooth and atmospheric midrange - neutral, with just the right timbre and pleasant warmth, but without being too intrusive.
Natural and expressive vocals - male vocals very deep and rich, female vocals light, airy but not shrill.
Insanely balanced, smooth and comfortable treble - detailed, transparent, but without harshness or tedium.
Wide, deep and immersive stage - creates a full presence effect, with proper instrument placement and atmospherics.
Excellent positioning of sounds - each instrument takes its place, the scene is multi-layered, there is no mush even in complex tracks.
Very comfortable delivery - music sounds natural and relaxed, without harsh and aggressive accents, which makes the headphones versatile for long listening sessions.
Cons: For me no, these are some of the best basshead sets I've listened to in a while, there is literally the perfect combination of powerful and textural bass and yet my favorite neutral warm tone of midrange and treble, with these headphones, you forget everything and just float in that atmospheric musical flow every time you listen to these headphones.

Thanks, great review. There was just a total mess about what codecs this model is actually equipped with. All previous reviewers claim it only has basic SBC and AAC. You, however, come up with the claim that it also handles the great APTX Adaptive. Could you take a screenshot to confirm this? Thanks.

Yes sorry I was incorrect. I was mainly using it with my iPhone when out of the house so forgot to check with my Android DAP. But I can confirm it does only have SBC and AAC - I have amended my review and added a screenshot showing AAC as the only high-res codec on my Android DAP.
