    Which ~$300 Chinese DAC/Amp?

Isn't thread drift wonderful?   All DACs don't sound alike, but they should. Seriously. A DAC is a source. Its job, its only job, is to convert digital data to an analog waveform that looks exactly like the analog waveform that was originally converted to digital data. It shouldn't have an...

    Why buy a Macbook?

Quote:   I think that's as good a summary of the Apple v Windows debate as I've read. All it misses is the "building a Hackintosh" part of this discussion. We could have skipped about 10 of the last 18 pages. Personally, I would consider a Hackintosh if I thought I could really go buy the...

    Why buy a Macbook?

Quote:     It was sincere. Personally, even if I could run OSX hassle-free on a Windows laptop, I'd be tempted to pay the Apple premium for the screen, the touchpad, the rigidity of the case and the hard drive that locks the instant it detects motion, but I suspect all of the...

    Why buy a Macbook?

Hybrys, I think I owe you an apology. I got the impression that you asked a seemingly open question about why people chose Macs, then immediately started to argue against and put down whatever answers they gave you. I thought I saw someone trying to draw opinions just so he could take shots at...

    Why buy a Macbook?

Why did you start this thread again? Because you thought you might consider a Mac even though you're already running a Hackintosh and you've already made up your mind? Can you say trolling? You uncover yourself.   Quote:

    Why buy a Macbook?

Quote: I know it's a bad idea; I was being sarcastic. Hybrys came here asking Mac people to justify the cost, and claiming to have an open mind. Then he proceeded to only listen to the pro Windows arguments, and made it clear that he has already decided to build a Hackintosh. He only came...

    Why buy a Macbook?

Hybrys, I think you should go to your local computer discounter, pick up the cheapest netbook on sale that day, then take it home and install OSX on it. Think how impressed all the other kids at school will be when they see that you accomplished, for $300, what they paid $1200 for! You will bask...

How much of a realistic improvment from soundcard to Dac/Amp?

Zoltan,   I own those headphones. They are not the "weak link," they are efficient. And what that means is that they don't require a lot of watts or current to do their best (I'm listening to mine directly out of an iPod Touch right now, and while it's not as good as my Senn 580s through an...

    Bit Perfect with a Mac

The used CD store is your friend, Miguel. I'm shocked at the stuff I've found there at 50 cents on the dollar. Time? A glass of wine and a pair of headphones after the family has gone to bed. I'll sleep when I'm dead   Tim

    Bit Perfect with a Mac

Doing well, Miguel, I hope you are too. I'm still deep into computer audio, though I've simplified, acquired some active speakers and focused on music instead of gear. I'm becoming a jazz fan in my old age...   Tim

    Bit Perfect with a Mac

It sure can't hurt to double-check, but iTunes should run bit-perfect on a Mac straight out of the box with no fiddling. When I double-checked my new MacBook Pro a few months ago, everything was pre-set as it should be. Congratulations on a great computer and music server.

    Doing away with the computer

Quote: I pick what I want to play, I turn it on and hit play. That's iTunes on a Mac. Of course all it really does is condense storage and make picking what you want to play a lot easier. CDs will do the same thing, with a lot of manual management. Tim

    Is this a "good" setup?

I haven't heard those little KRKs, but the company has a good rep and I'm a big believer in active speakers. If they're properly designed and executed, you'll get much better driver control, resulting in lower distortion, greater clarity, faster response, tighter bass, etc. Some small studio...

Many AV Receivers/Stereo Integrated amps do NOT use opamp powered headphone jacks

Yes. Low impedance phones are more likely to be adversely affected by a high impedance headphone output, but most phones are optimized for the standard of 120 ohms, and most headphone jacks are pretty close to that standard as well. Look at this logically. Whether using resistors or op amps...

    Desktop speaker dilemma

My latest flame are AVi's ADM9.1s. They are the size of active studio monitors with a 6.5" midbass and a 1" dome tweeter, but they are built for home use, with enough power to fill a room, not just a desktop. 300 watts for each woofer, 75 for each tweeter. All class A/B. Another thing that is...

    Using full sized integrated amp

Again, I'm not saying that there are no differences between amps, headphone or otherwise. What I'm saying is that the differences are blown way out of proportion by people who are obsessed with them, unnoticed by those who are not, and that if you really want a "night and day" transformation of...

    Using full sized integrated amp

Just to fan the flames of heresy and assure that my credibility remains the lowest on the board: I have tried my Senn HD580s, Audio Technicas and Etymotics in numerous integrateds and receivers -- vintage and modern, stereo and AV -- and in numerous dedicated HP amps -- tube and ss, desktop...
