Testing audiophile claims and myths
Quote: you aren't warning people against anything. frankly your posts are complete and utter nonsense. Phrases like this: "sound was blurry and indistinct; now everything is much more focused" and this: "Out of the box the BCL was a blurry, indistinct mess -- and slow as all hell. It has...- ShawnSmith

Size of music library
My collection is under 2000 albums. I'd guess that I have 1300-1400 cds and ~300 Lps. Honestly I feel guilty about it. It's far too large and I don't have the time to actually appreciate all of it. If all I did was sleep and listen to music it would probably take me somewhere around six months...- ShawnSmith

Seth Godin on Beats
Quote: I agree completely. Audiophiles tend to stick their collective nose up and look down on people that buy items like the beats and bose. They claim that they are just falling for marketing spin, or just buying popular items for some sense of belonging (fashion, etc). Yet they seem to...- ShawnSmith

Modern/contemporary jazz recommendations with electronic sounds?
so much of your post confuses me I don't know where to start. First of all fusion exploded in ~1970 not the 80s and 90s. Second of all I honestly can't discern what you are looking for. You aren't looking for 80s or 90s type fusion. OK. You don't want to hear stuff like MMW. OK. You don't want...- ShawnSmith

Ridiculously awesomely mastered albums?
Quote: I'd love to hear them, but I doubt I'll be shelling out $50 for yet another remaster of the stuff they put out. I have original vinyl pressings of a handful of the titles they've done, and everything else they have done that I am interested in I have on CD (most are the RVG editions).- ShawnSmith

Ridiculously awesomely mastered albums?
Quote: actually I think most remasters go well beyond simply remastering the album so even then it's hard to determine what role mastering had in the process.- ShawnSmith

Ridiculously awesomely mastered albums?
and just so no one accuses me of derailing the topic I'll respond to myself on topic. Quote: here is one of my most unconventional and controversial opinions... I don't think Rudy van Gelder's recordings are all that great for the most part. I'm a jazz nut. I probably have 200+...- ShawnSmith

I'm not trying to be a jerk 9pintube, but a lot of your post is hard to decipher so I'll try to break it down and respond to what I think you said. Quote: I think you are saying you'd love to hear what some top mastering engineers have to say about my comments. Although I am unclear...- ShawnSmith

Ridiculously awesomely mastered albums?
Just an FYI you guys aren't actually talking about well mastered albums. mastering is one step in the process of recording an album. You are mostly just talking about albums that just plain sound good. Mastering doesn't have anything to do with the recording, the mix, the effects or EQ on...- ShawnSmith

Do you level your audio?
what do you mean 'level'? are you referring to artificial software playback gain adjustment? If so the answer is no. I listen to entire albums even on my ipod. I adjust the volume when the album starts to a comfortable listening level, and that's good enough for me.- ShawnSmith

I don't think it was sloppy at all. I was just curious what you meant. I think we all have our own reasons for why we get into hi fidelity sound. I was just curious if you meant physical depth of the sound reproduction or the metaphorical depth of the experience. Quote:- ShawnSmith
