Schiit Freya Impressions and Tube Rolling Thread

I run an OG Freya and Vidar and still love it. I run stereo SE from Freya to a single Rythmik sub (with stereo in). If I power off the Freya first it will give a pop through the mains, but if I power off the Vidar first then Freya I don't hear any pop through anything, not even the sub (which...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I remember those. Recently I just gave a 200-ii amp and 2000-ii preamp back to my dad; Years ago he was a dealer and the one I most remember was the 700 series II with the electronic VU meters. We had that in the den along with the turntable and a 3000-ii preamp. I think there was a tuner as...

I also have one of the earlier versions of Freya in an Office/Bedroom system, and I'm either 20' or 3' from the speakers depending on which room I'm in. I can't hear tube noise unless my ear is on the speaker; just did this test with Freya volume on max. Right now I'm using some GE(GTB) and...

With this being my first tube amp I've wondered how long they will last, but I haven't noticed any issue of tube degradation at all. No degradation of sound quality or any crackles or buzzes or anything else. Right now I'm using some Raytheon/Baldwin and some GE that I've had for a while. No...

I have several pairs of old tubes I got off ebay including Sylvania, GE, RCA, Raytheon, Raytheon/Baldwin. I can't call any of them NOS because I don't know they were actually new, but perhaps used but tested well by the sellers. In any event, other than some tubes that arrived bad I haven't...

Actually http://www.schiit.com/products/freya gives you the answer: Gain: 2.5 (8dB) This is voltage Gain, so 20*log10(2.5) = 8 dB. Or, in reverse: Gain = 10^(8/20) = 2.5 (approximately, of course) For the older spec Freya like I have: Gain=5 => 14 dB.

Perhaps I'm one of those "unreported thousands" so that's why I'm chiming in: The few times I have had an issue with Freya has always been due to tubes: My stock Russians were a bit noisy and I also got a couple off ebay that were either very noisy or dead (which I did exchange for...

Yeah, maybe, otherwise you can have some problems with lower-amplitude sources. In my system I previously used a home receiver and a 2-channel integrated amp. So, those were effectively an amp and preamp of the same manufacturer and I was able to get enough volume in each case. Personally I...

I normally mute my system by muting the Oppo, but I just tested by muting the Freya and I couldn't hear any leakage. Nothing. Not even with my ear to the speaker.

I have Freya+Vidar and Monitor Audio Sliver 8. Freya being fed by Oppo-105D balanced outs and I also have a sub being fed from the RCA outs of the Freya. Sub xover set to 80 Hz and yes, I'm probably running it a little hot. The cable box feeds the Oppo via HDMI. This signal is very low...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I assume you've heard the one from Paris in 86? I think it's soundboard and is the show as opposed to the afterparty. It doesn't sound as good as the one you mention, but is really good. Missing some bottom end, so I think this might be one to bump up the sub, or maybe the EQ in foobar...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Reading Jason's last chapter and a lot of the posts that followed, I suppose I've been lucky to have a job where I've used a lot the math I learned in EE undergrad as well as grad school and beyond.

I have Oppo 105D -> Freya -> Vidar -> Monitor Silver 8 + sub For signals that have a reasonable level, I can listen to JFET or passive and get good volume levels. But for signals such as my cable box which is very low-level, I can get decent volume in those modes with both Freya and Oppo...

    Schiit Two Channel Clubhouse

Only you can answer the first part given your system and room, of course, but I do believe an x-over can help with overall clarity because you're not asking the smaller woofers of the mains to reproduce those low bass parts (as well as reducing overlap in frequencies by mains and subs.) As far...

Being a drummer I have to have that kick in the chest as well. The sub will help for sure to give it some weight and you will be able to independently increase the sub (i.e. kick) volume. But, keep in mind that unless you have some kind of crossover (or at least high-pass filter) you will...

Those are the ones I have. They work fine in Freya. Somewhere back in this thread I think there was mention of some socket savers that don't fit, and I think they looked the same, or at least close enough to appear the same, as these. So, there are a few varieties that have slightly different...

^ This times 1e6. What a fantastic beer. And that's an understatement. If you are ever in Brugge, there's the Duvelorium. The bar has a really nice porch to have a Duvel and overlook the town square with the Belfry tower. Been there a couple of times and picked up a special Duvel glass that...

Ahh, but I think that was also "before commonly available powered subs" were available. If anyone wants to add one of the many widely-available subs to 2-channel today, options are a) one of a couple of really expensive analog solutions that costs more than Freya+Vidar, b) a solution with an...

And I suppose fear of that experience is why I'm ok with pairs in the $30-50 range but not so much the ones that go for $150-200+. After all, these were made ~50-70 years ago! The 5 pairs I have all sound better than the stock 6H8C. Currently I don't have a good setup room wise, and I'm...

For bookshelves absolutely. But while many towers can go down to ~40 Hz range, many of those just don't produce the impact at lower frequencies. For example, my towers with 2 6.5" woofers each can't come close to my 15" sub for kick drum. Ditto bass guitar. The system does sound good now but...

This was discussed about a year or so ago and there were quite a few (including me) that expressed interest.
