Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?
650/6xx, if the tube amp is an OTL - the cheapest I can think of would be the Schiit Valhalla 2 (which is amp only). I would go with a separate dac anyway, but it also depends on your budget. I believe the 660 may work better with a solid state. The 660 shines with my Sony ZX300, but didn't...- nocturaline

To tell the truth, I no longer use mine. I've switched to the HD 660 S.- nocturaline

If you like lots of bass in your music, the Bravado is for you. Mids are slightly recessed (but just slightly), and treble is glorious. But the bass, man, the bass! It's a fun IEM that sounds pricier than it is.- nocturaline

SONY NW-WM1Z / WM1A
On the ZX300, Wav files are supported just fine, so I don't see why it would be an issue with the WM1A/Z. All you need is a good tag editor (I use Metadatics on Mac).- nocturaline

Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?
It's the ZX300. I'm on the 4.4mm balanced output on high gain. I generally listen between 65 and 70 out of 120 (max on the Sony). the ZX300, which doesn't have much power compared to other DAPs, drives the HD660S masterfully. In terms of power output, it does it as well as when driving my Empire...- nocturaline

Sony NW-ZX300
I've never listened to the 1am2, so I can't answer that question, sorry. However, I can say that the ZX300 drives the 600 S beautifully and with ease. On modern recordings, I'm at 65 in balanced mode and high gain. The 660 S sounds better on the ZX300 than it would on a big desktop tube amp. I...- nocturaline

Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?
I have received a new cable to replace the extremely long 4.4mm cable that came with the 660 S. Not only is it beautiful, the improvement in sound is mind-boggling. Generally, sound improvements with cables are subtle, but this time, it's quite noticeable. More space between instruments, bigger...- nocturaline

I have replaced the way-too-long (9 feet) 4.4mm cable of the HD 660 S with a beautiful and amazingly-sounding ZMF Michanikos. It makes my ZX300 even more awesome than before - nocturaline

Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?
Well, after some more listening and comparisons, I have concluded the following - which echoes the few last comments on this thread: With the Woo WA2 (OTL), the 650 has a sweetness that the 600S doesn't possess. In comparison, the 660S sounds a little bit cold. It's still quite good, but not as...- nocturaline

Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?
After over a week with my new HD660S, it's obvious to me that it belongs to the same family as the HD650. I love the HD650 dearly and have for 15 years, but with my Sony ZX300, the HD660S, thanks to its lower impedance, is extraordinary. In single ended, the Sony doesn't have enough power to...- nocturaline

SONY NW-ZX500
Plug the DAP into the Mac, making sure the SD card is in it and has been formatted in the player. In Finder, you should see two new drives: the Sony and the SD card. On the SD card, there will be a folder named Music. Transfer your albums/songs into that folder, then eject the card, then the...- nocturaline

Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?
I'm sure it will be fantastic indeed. I plan on upgrading to the WM1A as soon as I can, unless the new ZX500 is far superior to the ZX300, but somehow, I highly doubt it.- nocturaline

Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?
After spending 15 years with the 650, and over a year now with the 6xx and the 58x, I've ordered the 660 today, and will have them delivered on Friday. I won't use them much with my tube setup - I have a ZMF Atticus for that - but I believe they'll be excellent with my Sony ZX300, which I use...- nocturaline

Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)
I also had the original Lambda. They were powered by a speaker tube amp (Jadis DA30), and they sounded amazing. But times have changed, and I'm really looking forward to owning the Valkyrie. Although I love my Woo Audio/ZMF setup, I spend most of my time now, listening to the Bravado plugged...- nocturaline

I heartily agree with the Bravado choice. It's remarkable with the ZX300 and comes standard with a free balanced cable if you choose so at checkout. From prog rock to drum & bass, everything sounds impressive.- nocturaline

No, I haven't tried the Bravado single ended. Since I ordered it with the balanced cable, I went directly with that. I tried other headphones and iems single ended, but none were particularly exciting, which i blame more on the headphones than the type of cable.- nocturaline

Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread
The Stefan Equinox is an excellent cable, which cost $120 in 2004 (the new ones cost in the $400 now, I believe). It has more bass than the original cable, and gives more punch to the HD650. It's worth it. I've used my HD650 and Equinox cable almost exclusively for the last 15 years - now with...- nocturaline

Sony NW-ZX300
For $600 (so, close to 500 euros) I highly recommend the Empire Ears Bravado. They have awesome bass, great mids and highs. Although the bass is very strong, it never overwhelms that other frequencies. I find them both balanced and fun. They pair perfectly with the ZX300. oh, almost forgot...- nocturaline

Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)
I find the isolation just fine, granted that I use them in my house where ambient noise is not prevalent. As I said before, although the bass is strong and terrific, it's not overwhelming and let the other frequencies shine. Although I like some old prog rock, my main genre these days, is Drum...- nocturaline
