Headphone / Speaker auto switch?
Hopefully this is the right sub-forum. I am wondering if there is a device or device / software that can automatically switch between headphones and speakers. What I am picturing is a micro-switch with an arm on my headphone stand that gets tripped when the headphones are sitting on it. ...- jim3535

E-MU 1212m and Windows 8? Do they work?
I just got Windows 8 setup yesterday. I have the old PCI version of the 1212m as well. From what I can tell the Vista x64 drivers and patchmix work on Windows 8 Pro (x64). I don't use the digital inputs / outputs, just the analog ones.- jim3535

Media Remotes for PC?
I use the media center remote, but I use HIP to relay commands instead of the standard MS driver. HIP is an app that allows just about any remote to simulate any key presses / mouse. It has per-application settings (which switch automatically depending on app focus). This software works with...- jim3535

Anyone using Linux?
What audio player do you guys use in linux? I know foobar2k is dominant in win32 on head-fi. I've been on the edge of switching to Ubuntu for a while now. I'm just trying to solve some issues such as sound card support (ALSA might fix that), setting up dual head, and a few apps I need to find...- jim3535

Cd's or MP3's?
Like most people, I: buy CDs, rip them to lossless, and convert to mp3 for portable use. It's a shame that you can't get good quality music from online services like itunes. Who here wants to pay almost as much for a DRMed, low quality version of the music?- jim3535

My DVD Collection!!!
It's not a bad start. However, given that I generally hate horror movies, I have to say that Fitz's collection is much better.- jim3535

Damn....I can NOT believe I just did this!!
I know the feeling. My first venturing into hi-fi resulted in my getting my current setup of 1212m, PPAv2, and DT880s. I also didn't have an opportunity to listen to any of it beforehand, so it was all based off reviews and forum posts. I would just suggest relaxing until the gear gets there...- jim3535

Beyer DT770/80 Pro Question

Closed full-size cans for work?
I have been looking for a replacement for my mdr v600s I use at work. Lay off them; I've had 'em for 11 years and long before I knew anything about quality. Skipping ahead, I'm looking for a DAC, amp, headphone setup for 400 or less to use at work. Thus far I'm planning on getting the total...- jim3535

Opinions on people that couldn't care less about headphone quality?
People at work think I am crazy for buying a headphone amp. The soundcard and cans they can somewhat understand, but the amp really baffles them. As others have mentioned, people spend their money on crazy things and it's all a matter of personal priorities. I'm starting to agree that the...- jim3535

Slideshow software
An Ipod video with the AV cable would work, if you have one. I can't really say other than that because I haven't needed to make DVD slideshows.- jim3535

External Hard Drive recommendations please
Definitely get the enclosure and the drive separately. Almost all enclosures sold with drives suck bigtime. I would also steer clear of the cheap chinese generic ones. I bought one and the power brick died before I could even get the drive formatted and in use. I would highly recommend the...- jim3535

Computer Fan?
The air alone wouldn't kill the fan. However, it is theoretically possible for lots of dust or other debris jamming it and preventing it from spinning up. Personally I wouldn't do the compressed air into a laptop since I normally try to blow the dust out of the system instead of deeper into it...- jim3535

Head-Fi Wiki
I dug up this thread by searching and hoping that there was a head-fi wiki somewhere. I understand the concern over subjective articles and differing opinions. However, I believe that a wiki with general information would be invaluable to people who are new to this (such as myself). Some...- jim3535

describe & define the audiophile jargon here!
A wiki for general, standard information like this would be great. I find it difficult to find old / basic information that the community has stopped actively discussing. Unfortunately, after doing a search, I discovered that wikis were brought up, but never gained enough support to be implemented.- jim3535

CDex is a good free, foolproof, easy to use ripping program. It's not as advanced as EAC, but good for people who can't be bothered to setup more complicated programs.- jim3535

I Need Help: iTunes freeze problem
The first thing that comes to mind is that something like virus scan is chewing up resources scanning the file. I would first try to find out which process is eating the CPU time and then look for the reason why. Process Explorer is a great application for this since it lets you view a CPU %...- jim3535

Soundcard upgrade worth it?
A soundcard upgrade is worth it in my opinion. I have an EMU 1212m and do some gaming as well. Generally this works fine; the only things I miss are EAX and surround. However, the sound is very good and I haven't even wanted to use my speakers since I got my headphone setup. From everything I...- jim3535

Sony NWHD3 = RIP...searching for greener pastures.
That would depend on how you use the player. If you are rough or jog with it, then it would be silly to get a hard drive based player. It also depends on how much space you need and whether swapping out files on a smaller player would get annoying. Personally I would avoid sony products since...- jim3535
