PDX Portland Oregon Meet Summer 2008
Confirming I plan to be there this Saturday. Just moved from Corvallis so all my gear is in boxes, but I'll get it out today to make sure everything is still in working order and to warm up the tubes... As for sources I don't have anything too spectacular; a SACD DVD player, 5 disc CD...- sbyers77

PDX Portland Oregon Meet Summer 2008
If anyone else is on the fence about coming, please do. I know we audiophiles come off as elitist ******** sometimes, but I promise you we will not bite your head off. Unless maybe you are a Bose representative... The point of these meets is to audition other peoples gear and mingle with...- sbyers77

PDX Portland Oregon Meet Summer 2008
Got the PM from Andrew today - thanks for that or I might have missed this! Since last year I have built a CK²III which can been seen here. I also have a SOHA that didn't make is last year due to a dumb grounding error, and my diamond buffered Millett Hybrid which many of you saw last year. Any...- sbyers77

are most of you involved heavily in DIY audio engineers or have pro experience in the industry?
I am a senior in Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University. When first coming to school I had a hard time choosing between mechanical and electrical engineering since I always was fascinated by electronics as a kid, but I decided to go with mechanical and leave the electrical stuff as a...- sbyers77

CKKIII Problem
I had a problem similar to yours when I built my CK2III (intermittent crackling on one channel). The funny thing was that taping the PCB made it go away so I assumed it was a faulty solder joint. Re-flowing suspect joints on that channel (particularly transistor joints) solved the problem.- sbyers77

Mini3 and Tenergy battery
I've built two Mini^3s with Tenergy batteries. While it's a tight fit it will work. I found that the top (and bottoms) of the Hammond case was slightly bowed inward, probably due to their manufacturing process. The trick was to gently pry open the case to make it true or bow slightly...- sbyers77

Toner Transfer Method for Labeling Cases
It's actually surprisingly resilient as it holds up to rubbing and scrubbing very well, but it will chip off if you scratch with your fingernail. I am assuming its roughly the same resilience as a PCB transfer (but I've not done one before to verify). If it were a desktop amp that doesn't...- sbyers77

Toner Transfer Method for Labeling Cases
A few weeks back I was reading up on the Toner Transfer Method for PCB making in planning out a future project. It seemed easy enough; just print the image of your desired circuit on photo-paper using a Laser printer then transfer the toner to a blank PCB using an iron before etching. In the...- sbyers77

Help Please guys...my Grados are vibrating...
I have this same problem and I am pretty certain it is a hair since the noise comes and goes... But how does one disassemble the phones to get at the front of the drivers? Every tutorial I've seen only opens that back half of the enclosure.- sbyers77

Do 'new' Hakko 936-12's come pre-used/tinned?
I believe the temperature control was calibrated and then pre-tined with Pb-Free solder at the factory- so yes, "new" irons will look like that. Double check the manual to be sure though.- sbyers77

LSDiodes Gone! Need New Source for LED Ultra-Brights!
I've bought LEDs almost exclusively from cwithk on ebay. You can find basic ultra brights in standard colors (blue, white, amber, green, red, UV) in 3mm and 5mm varieties in packs of 10 for $2-$3 (with free shipping and resistors for working at 12V). They are shipped from Hong Kong, but I've...- sbyers77

What was your second mp3 player
I bought a Sansa E250. It was completely unremarkable until I put rockbox on it. Now I love that thing! I'm thinking of upgrading it to 8GB if I can find one with a cracked screen on eBay for cheap (apparently you can swap out the memory chips fairly easily).- sbyers77

w00t 30GB brown zune $79
I'd totally buy one if not for the fact that you have to use proprietary software ("Zune Marketplace") to synch the player. After having some bad experiences with SonicStage and other crappy media software, I can't take the risk! If I could synch with MTP in MediaMonkey I'd be $80 poorer...- sbyers77

Need precise measurements for Sennheiser connector
Anyone know of a supplier for just the pins? I ask because it doesn't seem like it would be overly hard to make a mold of the connector and cast your own plastic parts with the pins and wires built in. Has anyone tried this?- sbyers77
