try and narrow down all the variables. does this happen with the same disk? if it's recognised sometimes but not others, i'd be looking at the drive and/or cable.   if it's only certain disks i'd test the disk with other software and even just a normal CD player. i have a CD that no computer...

foobar2000+tak encoder for lossless archival. so long as you use something with accuraterip support, it doesn't really matter.   i use vorbis @ q5 (~160kbps) on my portables.

the only way to be sure is to do your own benchmarks. whilst codec A might last longer than codec B on player X, that doesn't mean the same is going to be true on your player Y. the firmware could be better tuned for certain codecs than others. i know the difference between flac and lossy codecs...

eh? i never questioned the source of your cue sheet/files. all i meant was that you can use these tools to verify the newly created split tracks against it. that is all.

that's not a background in foobar itself. it's just the transparency has been changed allow you to see the desktop wallpaper. for default UI, look at file>preferences>advanced>display>default user interface> window transparency for columns UI, look at file>preferences>dislay>columns UI. also...

you're right, the stock sansa firmware does not support m4a. but rockbox does so no worries. i have a rockboxed clip+ myself and play my itunes purchases just fine.

obviously you keep backups in case of hardware failure/unforeseen events. but why use 2 different lossless formats?? it really doesn't make any sense. whatever lossless format you choose, you can't go wrong. you can certainly pick the wrong ripper but that's another thread.
