iPod 30G (3rd Gen) crashed-repair?
Thanks to all for the help and advice. By the time I spend almost $200 on a new HDD and another considerable amount on a new battery I would be better off getting a new unit. I'm staying away from the iPod, though. I've got too many gripes about it. The fact that it not durable is just another...- Suedama

iPod 30G (3rd Gen) crashed-repair?
Ok. I'm here running the diagnostics. All of them run, but the HDD (hard disk drive) diagnostic test doesn't stop. The disk has been spinning for an hour with the "HDD SCAN" showing. It's probably hung up. I understand that the diagnostic test of the HDD is supposed to last "several minutes" and...- Suedama

iPod 30G (3rd Gen) crashed-repair?
labrat: Strangely, the disk spins up, but the unit will not boot. In fact, the disk will not stop spinning until the battery goes dead. I tried a complete system restore, but my computer would not recognize the iPod. I popped the case open, disconnected the battery and the hard drive...- Suedama

iPod 30G (3rd Gen) crashed-repair?
Thanks for the reply, BigFil. I have tried a reset, but to no avail. I haven't tried a full system restore. I'll try that next. By the way, when I try a reset, the screen shows a caution icon (triangle with exclamation point in it) and what looks like a file folder icon. I'm assuming that...- Suedama

iPod 30G (3rd Gen) crashed-repair?
I'm very distressed. I babied this thing since the day I got it. Barely a scratch. Then I dropped it onto a hardwood floor from a distance of about 2-3 feet and the thing went to the canvas like an overage fighter with a glass jaw. From what I've read, it's a waste of time sending it to Apple...- Suedama

iPod as External Hard drive? Can it be done?
One more thing you need to know. When the iPod is plugged in to your computer the hard drive activity on the iPod drains the battery like a small keg of beer at a frat party. Lesson: get everything lined up for your disk transfer, then plug in the iPod, then immediately unplug it after the...- Suedama

Goodbye Grados...
Hey, some people cannot be satisfied with just one. I have a Corda HA 2 amp with 2 headphone sockets (0 and 120 Ohm) and I have the DT 880s in one socket and the CD 300s in the other. I've been known to switch back and forth during the same song! Menage a trois, so to speak.- Suedama

Audio-Technica ATH-CM7ti Titanium: First Impressions
I've listened to them for 3-4 hours at this point and continue to be very impressed with them. Despite the cost, I am quite happy that I got these. It's been over a year since I last had ER4Ps. (I now have ER6s.) My comparisons with the ER4Ps, therefore, are based on the (diminishing?)...- Suedama

Audio-Technica ATH-CM7ti Titanium: First Impressions
Maybe a little bit, but there's not a huge difference between these and the iPod stock buds in that regard. I have small ear canals and it's alway been difficult for me to get a good seal with ear buds, but even though the CM7ti might be slightly heavier they seal a little better because they...- Suedama

Audio-Technica ATH-CM7ti Titanium: First Impressions
harkamus Sorry, I've never used the KSC35s. The tonal qualities are similar to the PortaPros, but with more detail. (Realize, it's probably too early to make very reliable comparisons-- I'm still at the "first impressions" stage.) I got my ATH's from Audiocubes. You can check the price...- Suedama

Audio-Technica ATH-CM7ti Titanium: First Impressions
I don't have a lot of true "ear buds" with which to compare them, except the buds that came with the iPod. I can compare them to various canal plugs like the Ety Er4P, Ety Er6 and Sony EX 70. IMO, the ATH-CM7ti's have a much richer sounding bass than either of the Etys. They have less bass than...- Suedama

Audio-Technica ATH-CM7ti Titanium: First Impressions
I just received these new ear bud sytle headphones yesterday. Their journey from Osaka, Japan had taken less than 72 hours! The packaging suggests that the contents are precious and when you feel the headphones in your fingers you are not dissappointed. They are beautifully crafted. They seem...- Suedama

finally, ipod 30gb...
I've had the 30G model for a while now. I think that the only issue I have with it is the battery life. It's one of those devices that you will just have to tether to the recharger routinely every night. Make sure you use the hold button when you are listening to things. Otherwise, every time...- Suedama

Easy reinforcement for A1000
A better, and more elegant solution, is to wrap something like thread or dental floss around the area. The pressure exerted by multiple wraps of thread or the like is incredibly powerful and I'll bet it's much stronger than the plastic band. This is the way the old wooden golf club heads used to...- Suedama

iPod/Audible.com Question/Gripe
Just got the new 30 Gig model. What a piece of technology! Absolutely amazing. Anyway, one of the first things I got for it was a copy of Nixon 1962-1972 by Stephen Ambrose from Audible.com. It's in 4 parts with each part being something on the order of 6 to 7 hours long. So I listen away for...- Suedama

Looking for some specific VERY sealed headphones
I struggled with the same issue for years - what headphones to use around a computer to block out the ambient noise. I tried the Etys ER4P/S, but although the isolation was good there was too much "microphonic" noise from the cord. The best solution I have found is the Ultrasone HFI-650. I don't...- Suedama

good cans for Jazz, unamped, closed?
Ditto the Ultrasone HFI-650 recommendation. Another very positive thing I can say about these Ultrasones is that they are excellent around a computer. I have not had mine very long, but I started using them with my computer setup (SB sound card and Creek OBH-11 SE amp) and I am very pleased...- Suedama

Improve the comfort of the Grado SR-80
Thanks for the sock mod suggestion. If done right it works very well. You need two socks with a good elasticized part at the top. As Sol_Zhen says, cut the socks about 4" below the elasticized section. From there, place the cut end of the sock (not the elasticized part) through the Grado ear pad...- Suedama

Database program for CD Collection?
OK, you know the CD collection is getting outta control when you buy a new CD that you "absolutely fall in love with" only to find that you own the darn thing already. (At least there is a thread of consistency in my musical tastes.) Anyway, I started looking for music database software to...- Suedama

Any W1000 or DT880 owners here who actually prefer the HD600?
In the last month, I've been going back and forth from the DT 880s to the ATH-A1000s with the HD 600s sitting quietly in the box. Yesterday, I was thinking about putting the HD 600s up for sale, but gave them another listen. Suffice to say that the HD 600s will be staying. They remain an...- Suedama
