Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements
I just dusted off my T50RP project and measured them now that I have a set of EARS to measure with. They actually measure way better than I remembered. I do have one problem though, which is that while I am very happy with most of the FR, the low mids have this big bump that I'd like to get...- MF Kitten

I'm more interested in what that did to the treble, really. It completely reflects the DIFFERENCE those pads will make though. And his measurements look identical to what I see when measure mine :)- MF Kitten

They have a flat response up to around 600Hz, where the high mid bump starts. It's got a bump centred around 1K. This makes the lower mids seem recessed by comparison, but that's not really what it's like. The zmf pads really just bring low mids up and high mids down so they meet. It just sounds...- MF Kitten

Fun fact: if you measure Verum One without an ear model at all, and only using a flat foam coupler that absorbs all reflections, the frequency response is an entirely flat line from 10Hz to over 10KHz. That means that all the variables and bumps in the FR comes from how the reflections interact...- MF Kitten

Something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fine-Stainless-Steel-Woven-Wire-Mesh-Filter-Grading-Sheet-Grill-Silk-Heavy-Gauze/223244338785?var=522035643834&hash=item33fa664661:m:mR7IYwFiAEuFIcZs3litJUQ I bought the finest tightest weave for this. @Garuspik I wanted to share this... I did some experiments for fun, and discovered something interesting. I bought some fine metal mesh a while back to use for damping in headphone mods. It doesn't absorb, and it doesn't reflect that much, so it's a pretty good material to just apply resistance...- MF Kitten

I noticed it's very easy to bend the metal ring, so I have had to be very very careful. The ring is also kind of sharp along the edges. I would like to see a fine mesh to protect the diaphragm from debris when the pads are off too, personally. Sometimes pads don't have any mesh, and you can't...- MF Kitten

They look big and heavy, but the weight is very similar to my HE-4XX. The cups are very lightweight and thin, and hollowed out rather than filled in and massive.- MF Kitten

I have! I absolutely love them, easily the best quality cans I've ever tried! They have this fluid transparent sound to them. I'm working on improving my measurement rig so I can get more accurate treble readings, but so far the results are insane. Flat line from 10Hz to 200Hz or so, and aside...- MF Kitten

HiFiMan HE4XX
I've been measuring my 4XX pair, and the left side has drastic sub bass rolloff while the right side is flat down to 10Hz. The left side also has louder mids and taller peaks. Seems like something's not quite right. Does anyone have ideas on what this could be? With how it's mounted into the...- MF Kitten

"Active resonance cancellation" for closed headphones. Could it make closed-back headphones sound more like open-back headphones?
The effort involved VS the payoff isn't really worth it, when physical modding (absorbers inside the cup) will do SO MUCH to get you closer to that exact result. You want to "eat" the reflections while maintaining a lot of air movement. So larger bass vents and absorbers together could probably...- MF Kitten

The Mod Collective: Bring all your full sized headphone mods here.
That kind of doping is of a specific type, and it's the opposite of what I'm thinking of. What I had in mind is actually coating the driver in a harder substance. Some drivers are coated with titanium, for example. The idea is to keep the driver's excursion, but keeping it from physically...- MF Kitten

Has anyone here tried speaker doping? Basically coating the driver in some way to reduce distortion. I'm very curious about this. Edit: the Beyerdynamic DT880/990/770 drivers are all doped, and have a matte textured coating that looks like glue or some other goop (though it's totally hard and dry).- MF Kitten

For context, 3dB is a 100% difference. If you go from 93dB to 96dB, you have doubled the volume output. The sensitivity rating is something like "decible per watt", isn't it? I don't remember.- MF Kitten

The cups should be the same size, but there's no guarantee the mounting mechanism would be the same. It'd possibly even be easier to simply mod in new connectors of a type that you like.- MF Kitten

Hi again Helen! I was told by another representative of Adorama that the headbands can be sent out if you arr willing to wait for them to be in stock at the warehouse. I chose to drop the V2 entirely myself, and I am debating whether I should just buy a V1 instead aince that's more familiar...- MF Kitten

I've made up my mind personally. If I can't get a new headband or just a strap sent to me, I am RMAing them and either getting V1's or abandoning the Hifiman idea. I don't care to send things back and forth like that. Ideally they'll just send a new strap.- MF Kitten

I know about that effect, yeah. My question is more about the sub bass being less impressive in the V2, and whether that could be caused by the clamp.- MF Kitten
