Sony Eggo MDR-D77 spares, earpads and cases
I have 55's as well. They are almost identical to '77s but lack the ultimate level of bass extension. All these bits I mentioned at the top will fit '55s equally well. They are equally brilliant and I think they actually sound better with analogue sources like classic cassette walkman DDs which...- memepool

THORENS TD-166 Mk II
I would go for an '80s or '90s integrated amp with a phono stage as a separate one will be more costly. Amps like NAD 3020A/3120 had really nice phono stage and were very common. Cyrus One has amazing phonostage. Or Japanese minimalist amps made for 'audiophile' market like Pioneer A400, Rotel...- memepool

Sony Eggo MDR-D77 spares, earpads and cases
Actually PTFE synthetic oil, I wondered about because I was worried about it getting inside the capsules, but I guess a tiny amount is safe enough? I haven't taken the capsules themselves apart to see how this is constructed inside. Also I haven't seen Super Lube in the UK but I use this kind...- memepool

Sony Eggo MDR-D77 spares, earpads and cases
I thought I would share this for anyone still using the classic Sony MDR-D55 / MDR-D66 / MDR-D77 Eggo headphones. In my view still amongst the best 'street' cans ever made with impedance that works with ipods / iphones acceptably well. Anyway.... just got delivery of some new pads from Ebay...- memepool

Pioneer PL-50 Turntable
Try Turntablebasics.com . If the measuremnts are off and the thing is too tight it will result in the speed being too fast but also worse it will wear your bearing unevenly. Turntable basics don't always have the perfect measurements, who does? as you are often talking about kit that hasn't been...- memepool

CD player?
Cd playback is a more mature technology than computer audio so you have to have a pretty serious computer based system to rival the sound of a decent CD player, even one from the 1980s. Plus everyone is dumping CD players in preference for the convenience of a computer based system so you can...- memepool

Vintage turntables vs. New Generation - Good value?
Quote: .One: Tonearms Simples. The best vintage turntables like the Garrards and Thorens for instance are motorboards. The arm is a separate consideration. While I'd agree with you that it's often simplest just to fit a good modern arm like a Rega RB250 which outperforms the vast...- memepool

Low Budget Vinyl Source
Quote: Lenco L-65 and 85 (http://www.thevintageknob.org/THEVAULT1/L85/L85.html) arn't as popular as the L-75/78 amongst enthusiasts because they are later '70s belt rather than idler driven so arn't contenders for a poor mans Garrard / Thorens TD124 mantle. They do the look the same as...- memepool

What are the High-End Audiophile Brands from around the World?
Do you mean which countries around the world make Hi-Fi equipment.. or which brands come (came) from which country? obviously the 2nd list is more interesting...so here's a few. (leaving aside questions of who now owns the particular brand, and going for the country where it came from...- memepool

What makes Bose products so attractive to non-audiophiles?
I once posed the question the other way around http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/197902/why-does-everyone-hate-bose but in answer to the OP because Bose market themselves well, their equipment is reasonably well designed, tolerably well made, reassuringly expensive and sounds a cut...- memepool

So I salvaged an old turntable/vinyl player from my garage...
Did you replace the stylus? If the technics amp is a contemporay of the turntable and you've plugged it into the phono inputs then a new stylus / cartridge would be the most obvious thing as it sounds like yours is completely shot.- memepool

looking for a vinyl player that also plays cds
The systems I mention like the Sony FH-7 are early attempts at miniaturising components into usually more compact visually matching systems. The best ones date to around the time CD was introduced or just before and will generally have a pre / power amp or component PSU and then cassette and...- memepool

looking for a vinyl player that also plays cds
The only thing approaching Hi-Fi that will do both in a neat package on this kind of budget is an early '80s mini or midi system from back when they were well made, something like the Sony FH-7 mini system with a matching PS-Q7 turntable and a D-5(0) PCDP...- memepool

OPPO BDP83 SE or used Linn Ikemi?
Ikemi is going to be much better if you just want to listen to CD's. CD is old technology and Ikemi was very much at the peak of CD, in UK terms anyway by the time they figured out how to make them. Spares will be a potential issue though as the transport is bespoke Linn, so not as common as a...- memepool
