I wouldn't buy a belt drive unit cheaper than the 1200. If you go mroe expensive, however, belt drive is a fine way to go.

If you to set the thing up yourself for optimum playback, you're going to tear your hair out. Azimuth, overhang, tracking force, VTA, etc. are all factors influencing the placement of the cartridge and the downward force of the arm. My best advice is to find a good DJ shop, buy a used table from them, have them set it up properly, and then treat them well. They will be your mentors.

The main difference between the MK5 and Mk2 is that the MK5 from a HiFi point of view is that a MK5 runs OFC copper tonearm wiring and a titanium plated tonearm. The other features on the Mk5 are GJ specific. I'd go for the Mk5 or you could go for a MK2 and get the KAB tonearm wiring mods.

The 1200 is nice and easy to set up and spares are every where to be found. However, budget wise you can get great belt drive decks out there for less money. Rega, Thorens, Micro Seiki. These are some fabulous turntable makers whose decks go for relatively cheap money at times.

TECHNICS SL1210 MK5

If you are going to spend 400 quid you could also get a Rega P3-24 for this in the UK. Don't waste money on the MK5 Technics as you'll find the older almost idential MK2 way cheaper that this. These can be had for 315 or less with free delivery from DJ stores online. For a few quid more you can get the Origin Live upgraded tonearm on the MK2 which will wipe the floor with the MK5 as it stands.

KABUSA upgrades are still ok for small things you can send through the post and they have a good stock of old parts and stuff but with the UKP tumbling against the the USD and Euro you are better off shopping as close to home as possible right now.

You can get some serious bargains by looking 2nd hand though if you arn't scared of doing a few basic oiling and cleaning jobs. In fact there is a guy selling an upgraded Technics as I mentioned above for £395 on ebay right now TECHNICS 1210 - REGA ARM PLATE - RB250 NEW ORTOFON RED on eBay(end time 02-Feb-09 18:10:34 GMT)

and there are dozens of other great decks by Thorens and Lenco on there all the time for as little as 50UKP.

Clicks and pops of vinyl doesn't bother me in the slightest infact i think it adds character reminds me it's not digitised.

Balancing equipment hmm sounds unfamiliar to me, i will have to brush up asap on the more technical aspects, i have a local hifi specialist that knnows his decks as they used to sell disco gear so i'll have them give the deck a once over when i get hold of it.

Thanks for all of the great advice, i have a lot on atm but in a few months i'll be having a bit of a windfall, might have to splurge on a killer deck and valve amp combo.

Wow, did we just step into a timemachine? Those moments when you think 'if you told me then what would happen I would have called you crazy'

Vinyl has overtaken CD in sales
New vinyl and reissues are easy to come by
The quality of modern releases is awesome and so lovingly made
There are no more worthwhile bargains in thriftstores
Prices of vintage gear has gone up considerably
New gear coming out regularly
Even after a 100 years innovations are still emerging
You stumble over turntables and tube amps in all hifi shows
You see lp's played in so many films and commercials

Btw, I just listened to a new lp on almost all Chinese high end gear, turntable, arm, mc cartridge, tube phono amp, amp. The only exceptions were my old mc- transformer and the Maggies. I think the patent on that tube phono has expired. You can get great clones everywhere. I just did some extra mods on it and rolled tubes to vintage Philips Miniwatt valves.

If I think of how much progress I have made over the years on my digital setup (DACs). It was getting close to my vinyl 15 years ago. And now, there is such a chasm. Vinyl is so much more realistic. Sweeter, more detailed, more space.

So what I just heard. You wouldn't believe it was vinyl. So absolutely quiet. No noise, no hum, no ticks, no swoosh. Just beautiful music beyond my room.

It's like Back to the future.

sooo good. Hey check out this link record cabinet

We just launched, let me know what you think
I have a professional opinion as a furniture maker. But you won't like it. I also used to work in R&D in a plastic factory and as such you won't like my opinion either.

For me as a vinyl enthousiast I'd say it's useless for placing my turntable on. Where do you put the phono-amplifier? And there's not enough storage space. And who places his speakers like that? It looks nice for a beginner but I don't think it's very practical. Also, it doesn't look very stable without a back.

I don't mind being exited about one's own product. But I think this is not the right topic.
