If the DP-S1 is a Japanese sourced model, Tidal was never available on it. (search this thread for discussion about it). That also goes for the Pioneer version.- MrSlim

My DIY electrostatic headphones
Although I have to agree that the KGHSSV Carbon is likely close to or is top of the heap for Electrostatic amplifiers, you might consider something a bit simpler for a first pass at building an Electro amp. Check out the CFA electrostatic amp thread on the forum where the Stax Mafia hang out...- MrSlim

If the 3.5 mm is a TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) connector, then it's likely that they use a common ground with a hot left and right. An adapter to convert to a 2.5MM TRRS (R+,R-,L+,L-) would end up shorting out the R- and L- and possibly damaging the balanced output. IF the headphones us a 4...- MrSlim

No, you can output to a USB Dac from the Onkyo, but not receive from another device to use it's DAC.- MrSlim

Can anyone try unTaring it on a linux box? (unless that's been tried already). If it's agreed that the larger of the two files is corrupt, I'll reply to the originator of the message to possibly retry uploading them again.- MrSlim

Ok, we can agree to disagree, but I still think they would be shooting themselves in the foot by only having the benefit of dual DAC's for Balanced operation. There is no indication on the Data sheet http://www.pioneer-audiovisual.eu/sites/default/files/datasheets/english/XDP-30R.pdf either...- MrSlim

Onkyo DP-S1 Rubato / Pioneer XDP-30R Private
I'm going to disagree with this. I think most Dual Chip DAC's use a single DAC for each channel, and the DAC circuitry would be ahead of the amplification, where options to use either Balanced or unbalanced would exist. Also most DAC chips output a balanced signal by default and require more...- MrSlim

I got a revised reply yesterday: Dear Mr. Dempsey, I would like to correct our earlier statement. Following further investigation the XDP-30R firmware has been confirmed to contain open source software licensed under GPL/LGPL. The open source code files can be downloaded via following link...- MrSlim

I can't comment on most of your Tidal/MQA questions, but I believe others have mentioned that MQA tracks can be streamed to the 30r. Unfortunately it can't do offline Tidal playback due to it being a custom Linux OS, vs Android that is used on the 300r. There is an equalizer, but I don't know...- MrSlim

My DIY electrostatic headphones
Good luck with that... Some of the variables that would have to be taken into account would be driver size, film thickness and tension, if you are looking at the resonant frequency of the driver. True, Tidal is a bonus for sure. One caveat though, since this is a Linux based player (vs Android), the license for Tidal does not allow downloads for offline use.- MrSlim

Onkyo DP-S1 Rubato / Pioneer XDP-30R Private
It's a great unit for the price, but it might be overkill for you if you are planning to stack it with a Mojo, since you'd be loosing the benefits of the dual 9018 DAC's and balanced out. It might make more sense for you to get a Hidiz AP60 for under $100 on Ali Express.. Edit: The above might...- MrSlim

The sound quality is very good. True, at $500, it might not be, but the value proposition at $200 is excellent. The main thing you get is dual 9018 DAC's with balanced output and selectable filters which can be a considerable step up in sound quality over unbalanced. For me, Being able to play...- MrSlim
