High impedance over-ear open for heavy metal
Ah of course, yes i have a SR125. I may go this direction - but i do not prefer the grado ear cups. Will look for an opportunity to try a higher end grado. Thanks for the recommendation!- kchapdaily

High impedance over-ear open for heavy metal
Although i think the sound would be exactly what i am looking for, I'm definitely worried about the HE-6 build quality unfortunately. My HE-4 are constructed the same and they did not hold up to even gentle use apparently. Under the plastic earcup gimble clamps there are screws affixing the...- kchapdaily

High impedance over-ear open for heavy metal
Good info on the 650, I will definitely look elsewhere then. Yeah i think i am pretty much looking for a sidegrade (i like that phrase!). more engaging is a good way to sum it up i think. I guess I just want to get a feel for other sound signatures so that i may inform my decision to upgrade to...- kchapdaily

High impedance over-ear open for heavy metal
Hey guys, I am looking for recommendations for a higher imedance open over ear hp primarily for listening to heavy metal. I will also be using these for a bit of folk/acoustic type music. I have an LCD-2 which i love, but i want to try some other stuff to see if i can find a reason to upgrade...- kchapdaily

mechanical pencils?
Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I stopped carrying my 600 around when i almost broke it from dropping it. Thats when i bought the 800. I'll have to look into some of your suggestions. I agree completely with your comments on weight, i think thats the reason i am so stuck on heavy pencils. I...- kchapdaily

Creek OBH-11: Reducing Gain to Unity
pasta, it looks like we may have overlooked C3/C103! If you calculate the impedance of C3 and R5 in series at audio frequencies, you will see that C3* is actually quite a dominant part of the impedance. At 100Hz, the impedance of that branch is almost 33.4Mh ohm! This is certainly curious, as it...- kchapdaily

That is fair. I guess the takeaway here is that if you are going to buy the Hifimans, you should make sure your amp can put at least 1 watt through them. Caboos, what did you end up with? Unfortunately it looks like the Hififman sale has ended, but some shops are still listing them at the...- kchapdaily

How much of a difference would a DAP make compared to a Phone (iphone / Note 5)
The Mojo has more power and better performance specs, and has superior analog and digital design. I have not listened to either, but i very much expect the mojo to sound better than the oppo. Portable for me is keeping it in my backpack to use at work and for travel, so i am not worried about...- kchapdaily

I agree with you, I think that is the better route; in fact i am in the market for a mojo is well! I do a fair bit of streaming music from spotify, so i lean away from DAPs for that reason. I think DAPs have to make more compromises than a portable amp/DAC does- kchapdaily

As far as i know, airplane mode just disables the comm radios on your phone to comply with aircraft RF/EMI requirements. It might help a little with noise but its probably marginal, situational, and hard to test. Also it would depend greatly on the electrical design of the phone. What you...- kchapdaily

...all do - this is is your output rail voltage), higher impedance headphones need less current than low impedance headphones. 15V/32ohm=0.47A, 0.47A*15V=7W. Whereas 15V/300=0.05A, 0.05A*15=0.75W. Most amps are going to be able to do 0.75W, but most are NOT going to run 7W without letting...- kchapdaily

That is not exactly true. Just because the headphone has a relatively low impedance does not mean it can be used to good effect* without an amp. The 400i is rated at 93dB/mW. This is a very inefficient headphone and will need an amp. You must also consider the damping factor. This is the...- kchapdaily

What do you have (or have budgeted for) in the way of source and amp? Right now the HIFIMAN HE-400i for $300 (black friday sale) is going to be tough to beat.- kchapdaily

Retractable points are what contribute to instability. That is the reason i favor the rotring 600 against the 800.- kchapdaily

That will set your gain correctly, but you still need to watch out for the change in current draw affecting your output transistor setpoint.- kchapdaily

Creek OBH-11: Reducing Gain to Unity
That should work, but you will also have to short R5 and R105 as the increased voltage at the inverting terminals of the opamps will draw significantly more current through these resistors. This could cause damage to your output transistors, and could move the operating points enough to cause...- kchapdaily

Feedback on Soldering Station
If i were you i would get a nice namebrand iron like the new Hakko 888 and then use whatever budget you have left for a standalone rework station, or go with a combo and just use the iron as a secondary/backup. I had a cheap digital aoyue for a while, and it seemed ok, but a good iron just puts...- kchapdaily
