I think just about every model of the grado line has its share of lovers and haters. The price which you paid for them is pretty darn good. I would say listen to them as much as you can then decide whether or not to return them.

I would say not just due to the fact that they can damage their ears if they are not responsible with the volume. Depends on the child tho I guess if he is cautious then maybe, but if I had a kid I would not let him use canal phones.

by far the 280 > 200. The 280's are a bit bulky so they dont make for the most ideal portable cans in the sense of looks. They do isolate and sound great tho. Yes I own both of these cans.

Now that I have had more time to play with my Shure e5........I noticed something else =) With most of my mp3's I tend to use volume 1 on my ipod. This is straight to a ipod (no amp - and no eq settings on ipod). SO the questoin is this: at what volume do you use your ipod and shure e5.?
