Sennheiser HDVD800 Headphone Amplifier

I have both the HD600/650s. The HD 600 sound really really good, almost as good as the HD 800 minus the sound stage and imaging.

I agree with this. I have the HDVA600 (using a Bifrost Uber DAC; I avoided the HDVD800 because I know I'll want to upgrade the DAC at some point). If anything, I'm more surprised by how good the HD600 sounds with this amp than the HD800. Using HD600 with a balanced cable, it sounds almost as good as the 800, maybe 80% there – the detail is all fantastic, but it's got nothing like the soundstage and imaging. The HD800 is perhaps a touch more detailed, but it produces this additional sense of breadth and space that the 600 doesn't get. TBH, though, I like having both headphones and being able to swap based on feel/mood. I don't always want the hyped-up HD800 presentation. Should probably add that using the 800 with this amp, I don't have any problems with treble, just incredibly clean, detailed music.

So minus the two things that actually make the HD800 special? That's like saying I look just like Brad Pitt, minus the face and the body

If that's true, this is like the release of the HDVD 800 all over again. It also took an unbelievable amount of time to come out.

People have complained that the DAC in the Sennheiser HDVD800 DAC/amp is of merely modest quality, while the amp in there is of great quality particularly matched to the HD800 headphone. Folks have pointed to the fact that the HDVD800, including both DAC and amp, is listed at $400 more than the HDVA600, which is the amp alone, with no DAC, and they have said that the HDVD800 DAC is of quality one might expect for the relatively modest price of $400.

I have been testing this claim. I am not able to verify it.

I have bypassed the DAC of the HDVD800 and put in two different DACs, then feeding directly into the HDVD amp and from that, into HD800 headphones.

The Stockholm V2 MHDT DAC, which was on tour perhaps a year ago, was one such DAC. It lists at $940. In detailed listening comparison to the HDVD800 DAC, the Stockholm was similar, with a bit smaller soundstage, and hence scoring just a bit lower overall than the HDVD800 DAC. Here is a post on the test (it is the second chart labelled "Test Results.") https://www.head-fi.org/f/threads/t...tube-24-192-input.797275/page-7#post-12480315

I just tried the Schiit Bifrost Multibit DAC ($650) against the HDVD800, again to perceive no significant difference between the two.

Hence, I have found no shortcoming with the DAC that is in the Sennheiser HDVD800. I'd be interested in comments of others, with the particular DACs that they have compared to the HDVD800 DAC... I may perhaps be able to try those in comparison as well.

I agree with you. Tried the Violectric V800 and the Hegel HD25, both well renowned DACs which I like quite a lot, and found the HDVD800 holding up (all using spdif input)

I have the hdbd800, and have fed it with my gungnir non-multi bit and OPPO ha-1, and really found the hdvd800 DAC held its own. Mind you, I may not have golden ears... Perhaps thankfully.

I found a little difference when fed hdvd800 amp by ak120ii (cs4398 dac) compare to it own dac(Pcm1795) as like when listening with mouth open.
Ak120ii + open mouth is simillar to hdvd800 dac : A bit metalic and sharpen.
I wont keep mouth open when using ak :D
