only one i could find is https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Metal-Back-Rear-Case-Housing-Cover-Shell-for-iPod-5th-Gen-5G-Video-60GB/32766242150.html?spm=2114.01010208.3.10.1uZPyt&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_2_10065_10068_10000007_10084_10083_10080_10082_10081_10060_10061_10062_10056_10055_10054_10059_10099_10078_10079_10073_10097_10100_10096_10070_10052_10050_10051_424,searchweb201603_9&btsid=bae22f5a-43d1-4636-80db-7dd945213994

and thats with zero reviews and from a seller with less than 50% positive feedback, and it doesnt even say its a bigger back plate. it looks bigger, but thats about all i can tell.

Its clearly a thick backplate in the pic, and it says its for a 60gb which means it has to be as there isn't a slim 60gb.

Bad feedback is a bit off-putting though.

Can you not just search for thick ipod back on ebay?  It gets dozens of hits.  They aren't hard to find.

ebay would ideally be my last choice. what about amazon? i've got prime, and the sooner i get it the sooner i can use my ipod.

This still ships from China. Unfortunately, Amazon Prime won't do any good.
And, yes, the backplates are interchangeable between 5th, 6th, and 7th gens.

If you just want one that works Fiio sells them.... Or search on Amazon

Custom, You could build your own or drop about $50 for a hand made one

FiiO discontinued the 30-pin LOD cables.  Your best bet finding one on ebay if you want a FiiO L9 or getting a knockoff off of aliexpress etc.

Or make your own.  It's actually pretty easy, but takes some tools (soldering iron etc.)  The upside is that you can make your own cables afterwards for other things as well.  As far as cable go, a 30-pin LOD cable is actually pretty easy, as you only need to connect three pins.

Bengkel Macro makes awesome / affordable LOD cables... I have one. they ship from Indonesia so to some countries only EMS is available. I grabbed mine in a bigger order so I don't know what shipping for just a LOD would be.

Does anyone know if Rockbox changes the SQ compared to stock firmware? I remember this was an argument when the Rockbox port first happened but I wonder if this has been perfected or if it's kind of like the Xduoo X3 situation where RB sounds notably different from stock firmware

I dont think the SQ is that much different. But Rockbox's full range of EQ capabilities and settings does improve the sound. Having several types of headphones, I can adjust it accordingly. If that's your thing. It is mine. I love to tinker with Rockbox.

Well, a friend saw this thread and brought me his old 60gb 5g iPod video... with a broken headphone jack.  The jack is still functional, but the white plastic clip that holds it to the rear shell is broken.  Do replacement hold/headphone flex from the 6/7g work with the 5.5gb backplates?  It's one less variety of part I need to order...

For a 5th gen 60gb you'd need one for a thick case. You can buy one for 5th gen 60gb or 80gb which come with white/silver buttons or for 6th gen 160gb which comes with black buttons. 7th gen are all slim. Just look out for thick backs.

The parts for my 320GB iPod Classic:

I thought I'd share my newest creation...

A 512GB iPod Video/Classic with an extended-life battery and internal Bluetooth

So the Bluetooth idea came from this link:

Mod Your 5G Video iPod With Internal Bluetooth

However, this is the one image necessary to connect the bluetooth module to the motherboard:

I removed the bluetooth module from the casing and soldered it to the motherboard:

I replaced the harddrive with Tarkan's iFlash-Solo and a 512GB SD card.
I also added an extended battery from Alex:

This was the hardest part -- getting the signal to pass through the metal.
So, after hours of testing, I finally decided to cut the back open.
I used the plastic from an unused faceplate:

As you can see, the bluetooth connects beautifully now.
I drilled a hole in the bottom right of the plastic so I could get to the bluetooth button.
I used the red case as in my original mod above to keep my iPod safe.

How long does your battery last??
