Chicago area Headphone Meet - January 28th 2017 "ChiUniFi"

Short of a snowstorm (I'd be coming from Minnesota), I'll be there. I'm unsure of what gear I'll bring yet, and will update once the date gets closer.  I'm looking forward to hearing Zach's new headphones.

Indeed. It's a beast. It does throw out some serious heat in this configuration, but it doesn't strike me as unsafe. But yeah, it's pulling some juice.     I usually find the HD650 a bit woolly in the bass and slightly more laid back than I prefer in most setups. That's not the case at all...

I've been enjoying my amp driving modded HD650's this evening. Tubes being used are 4 GEC 6080's on the outputs via adapters, driver is a National Union 6F8G and a Western Electric 422A rectifier. This is probably the best I've heard this headphone. Improved imaging and separation were...

^^^Excellent. Just placed an order for a couple adapters to try out for fun. Thanks for the info!

Pretty cool. Looking forward to your impressions. What are the dimensions of the adapters? Just curious as my output tubes are offset towards the back of the unit.

    Chicago Meet impressions - Feb 6th 2016 - ChiUniFi

Thanks to everyone for being welcoming and for a fun meet. There was lots of nice gear in attendance and it was fun to get to listen to some things I'd never heard before. For me, the biggest highlight was definitely getting to (finally) hear the DNA Stratus - highly resolving, spacious...

My amp doesn't have the 5998 bias switch either. I don't think the earlier builds did, from what I remember reading. It can still run 5998 tubes (I am currently using 5998 equiv), just not as optimally.

Thanks for the impressions! Appreciated.   Just a note: I would add that the Ken Rad VT-231 6SN7GT isn't a very transparent or open sounding tube with the Glenn. The two I have seem to lack treble extension and are very warm and colored. I can see where some would find this sound appealing...

Sorry to hear that, Tony. Good to know that the amp is alright though.    I suspect the 800S will be a worthy purchase. I'd like to hear it for myself before making the final decision about "upgrading", but it seems like a logical course of action if your existing 800 down for the count.

While it could certainly be related to a difference in tube presentation vs. solid state, the end result is still the same for me - that is to say, I'm hearing low level detail that I haven't heard with the Rag. However, they're obviously very different amps, with different design objectives and...

Thanks for arranging that, Oklahoma.    See you all this coming weekend.

    Minneapolis Meet Nov. 7, 2015

Nothing is set in stone. Typically 2-4 hours I'd say, but people can leave when they wish. Usually there are a few people who can only stay an hour or so. Not a big deal - whatever works for you.

    Minneapolis Meet Nov. 7, 2015

So you're able to make it, DisChord? Nice.     Sounds good. Let us know if you need a hand with anything or need any suggestions for an alternate location.

    Minneapolis Meet Nov. 7, 2015

I don't believe so. We should get that lined up asap. Any thoughts/suggestions. We've had different venues for the last 3 meets.   As for the rest of the crew - good question!

    Minneapolis Meet?

I'm down with the 7th of November. There doesn't seem to be hardly any momentum for a meet at the moment, so we'll see who else is interested.    Finding a venue shouldn't be an issue, once we have an idea of how many people want to attend.

    Minneapolis Meet?

I could do any of the dates, except for November 21st.   The 28th may be difficult for a lot of people, due to the holiday.

    Minneapolis Meet?

Speaking of which, we should probably start actually planning something out. What does everyone's availability look like?   September has suddenly become extremely busy for me; the only weekend I'm open is the weekend of the 19th. If everyone would prefer to do something this month, by all...

    Minneapolis Meet?

Congrats on the wedding! I'll talk to some of the regulars come August and see what we can set up for Sept.     Don't worry at all about impressive gear, etc. The point is just to hang out, listen to different gear, and talk with people who share the same interest - no big deal. Trying to...

    Minneapolis Meet?

As for a meet, I propose we try and do a large meet in September like we did last year. People tend to be very busy during the summer months, and I think it'd be good to get a strong turn out.      Quote:   "Full potential" is difficult to achieve with the HD800 (i.e. expensive)...it can...

Norne Audio (Was: Norse Audio): Feedback & Impression Thread

It probably boils down to personal preference on some level. I use the Draug 2 with my modded HE-6 and find it to be a synergistic combination, but I find the HE-6 to be a bit peaky and etched in the treble - a trait that doesn't bother everyone. I suspect the solvx would be more delineated...
