New Audio-gd DAC-19 [10th Anniversary Edition]
You probably need this cable which has the 'old' style on one end and the 'new' style on the other. I've used this to connect my DAC19-DSP to an older C-2 amp (Both are single ended). I don't know if the SE gear and Balanced gear is compatible through ACSS but perhaps this might help clarify...- Tom W

Thoughts on a bunch of DACs (and why delta-sigma kinda sucks, just to get you to think about stuff)
@ Sorrodje, Thanks for the comparison. Just curious original Octave or Octave Mk II? What digital source(s) did you use? USB? CD Player?- Tom W

Metrum Acoustics Octave
I can't say. This is my first 'real' setup since 1980. When I first got it I thought it was great until it started to get on my nerves the more I listened to it. It took a lot to calm my DAC19 down in order for me to 'enjoy' it. In the end I have more money in support equipment than I...- Tom W

Metrum Acoustics Octave
I picked up an OR5 for the sole purpose of auditioning DACs as I thought I was listening to the sound of my transport more than I was the sound of the DAC's I was trying in my system. When it came in I placed it in my system to establish a baseline and I haven't thought about upgrading...- Tom W

Metrum Acoustics Octave
My Audio GD DAC19-DSP (which I've read is darker than the Octave)/Senn HD-650 combo is like this. I like it but I can see where it's not for everyone. The Octave MkII is on my list but I'm considering the Schiit Yggy too. It's not that I prefer a dark(er) sound per se but I'll try...- Tom W

Audio-Gd Master 7 - Discrete Fully Balanced DAC (PCM1704)
I thought at one time the HE-7 was an upgraded REF-7 with a separate power supply but from the photo this unit is different from what I remember it being so perhaps there are different products for different markets.- Tom W

Audio-Gd Master 7 - Discrete Fully Balanced DAC (PCM1704)
Everyone is different but I have a 'cheap' Audio-GD amp (C-2) with plain ole HD650's and I listened to a few $1500 DAC's. In the end I spent quite a bit more than $1500 on my DAC/Source. Even the HD650's allowed me to hear 'issues' with some of the DAC's I auditioned and then of course...- Tom W

Does your REF5 have a RCA or BNC coax connector? The reason I ask is I've found the Audio GD DAC19-DSP with the RCA connector to be fussy regarding S/PDIF sources and am thinking the REF5 might be similar. I've settled on the EA OR5 w/ Hynes regulator, EA Short Block, Veloce Black Cat...- Tom W

New DAC, very different soundstage!?
I'd try listening to a few recordings of classical music as 'most' of the time it's recorded all at once (one Star Wars piece that I have had some instruments added during the post production process and they're totally off the stage and up in the air by themselves). If you're hearing...- Tom W

Thoughts on a bunch of DACs (and why delta-sigma kinda sucks, just to get you to think about stuff)
I liked the improvement the Short Block made in my system. IMO it brought the OR5 up another notch. I wonder how much of that difference was to the cutting of the +5V line and how much was due to the filtering. I only had the OR5 a few weeks when the SB arrived so I'm sure it wasn't...- Tom W

Quote: I've read this on another forum too (comparing the OR5 to the AP2). It's somewhat difficult to imagine that a string of ones and zeroes can sound dark given a bit perfect source. I purchased an OR5 a few weeks ago and although it's my first experience with PC audio I...- Tom W

Looks like JecklinStax is... "I don't know... I just ordered a DI V3 (with TCXO) and hooked it up. I just use the coax input on the DI, no usb connection, so I thought the firmware version was irrelevant. I repeat: this thing sounds fantastic!" I'm currently using a V1 with the...- Tom W
