Why not just use some equalization at low volume, something like a (well designed) loudness contour circuit ?

I have the Fostex T50RP and the audio-technica ATH-M50. The only mod I made to the Fostex is replace the pads with Shure SRH840 pads. All I can say is that I almost never use my M50 anymore. The Fostex is much better and natural to my ears.

I have the Polk Audio OWM3 paired with a 8" active subwoofer and all I can say is I'm shocked by the sound quality for the price! Smooth and natural tonal balance, clear open midrange, nice soundstage. These little speakers seems to have no real weaknesses, wich is a big surprise for 79$ a pair.

I have the Cambridge S20 plugged into the Logitech Z-2300 subwoofer and are very pleased with the sound. The little S20 are A LOT better than the original Logitech satellites : more open, natural and clear.   Get a subwoofer, because there is no bass in the S20.
