Wow, thanks for the extra info.   I think you'd be very much on the money, in a nut shell the board was just a very basic conversion of one type of terminal to another connector for data, there is only 2 actual parts to it with both being through hole connectors, I'd imagine fiddling...

I would say, as you've guessed that it's a deliberate production choice. I know they had said Discovery was ran through aome cheap compressors, so I'd heavily lean to it being intentional. So pretty much stiff bikkies. Pretty massive letdown of an album anyway so no big loss. :D
