    PCB trace capacitor/resistor

Wow, thanks for the extra info.   I think you'd be very much on the money, in a nut shell the board was just a very basic conversion of one type of terminal to another connector for data, there is only 2 actual parts to it with both being through hole connectors, I'd imagine fiddling...

    The 3D Printer Thread! :D

Just thought I'd mention, I read recently there's been a study done and apparently 3d printers put harmful emissions into the air, so may be best to operate them somewhere well ventilated, that is if you're not doing so already.   Stay safe, looks good.

    PCB trace capacitor/resistor

Sorry, I think I didn't explain this one clearly enough originally, the pins had what looked like a little capacitor made up of tracks on the board connected to them, like this:     |   -----------------| |-----------------   | |   -----------------| |-----------------   | |  ...

    PCB trace capacitor/resistor

I've noticed on an RJ45/8P8C socket that the tracks are arranged as capacitors on some of the pins. Layout would be roughly like if you spread your fingers on each hand apart and brought them together without touching. I've also seen on circuit boards of some devices I/O lines have a section of...

Daft Punk RAM album Pops, Crackles, hisses, and other artifacts in FLAC

I would say, as you've guessed that it's a deliberate production choice. I know they had said Discovery was ran through aome cheap compressors, so I'd heavily lean to it being intentional. So pretty much stiff bikkies. Pretty massive letdown of an album anyway so no big loss. :D

More like Empire of the Sun?

Quote:   Fair enough, I like just compiling name after name and the process of finding what I like from all that the information overload... but that's me I guess.   I'll give you some in track form, might be easier to soundcloud/youtube/whatever to see if you like them. Hopefully...

Small voltage-doubler rectifier AC to DC supply for amp projects

I'm not an expert, but I'll still throw some thoughts out there.   ^ I was going to suggest as above, even if just LM317/337, only a few more components for adjustable regs then you have a lot more flexibility.   Are you getting boards made, etching, just using perf/protoboard ?   If...

Why do no audiophiles listen to electronic music?

Quote: I've found the opposite, as if the tracks have not been mastered with the consideration of listening through cheap gear, some songs can say sound flat and lifeless but on good gear much fuller and lively.   Just a thought, as if they haven't listened to what they've produced...

    What's inside the casing?

Quote:   Not entirely true. It can be if you don't know what you're doing.   Even then, some things are difficult at times and they might not be made to come apart often or it may be somewhat destructive or require replacement parts to re-assemble.   Just from experience...

WANTED: Paid consultant to advise on balanced M^3 build

Some free advice from me is that there are plenty of people here that can and will offer their advice and opinions for free. From what I've seen AMB has always been pretty good in terms of support here and on his own site, as do others with their projects available to the DIY community. Also...

    What's inside the casing?

I know plenty of things that serve no real constructive purpose, sometimes knowing things can be enjoyable in itself. I cracked open a mobile phone car charger to see what was in it. They just used a heap of diodes in series to drop the voltage down to around 5v. Have I further used this...

    What's inside the casing?

Quote:   Blasphemy !    I think there is a line between curiosity and actually doing something though, the OP may not be confident enough to do it themselves. I know I can get a bit heavy handed and tend to break things.

Why did magic smoke come out of my Nuforce HDP?

I've seen one on an electric fence energiser. Basically had a huge hole blown out the side and there was black dust everywhere, scorch marks on the board, the smoke had made a violent escape.

metal vs carbon resistors, what is the difference?

Quote:   When I first started out in electronics in my mind I thought that with a resistor there is somehow some sort of blockage or restriction and that surely this would lead to a build up of heat, due to the electrical 'friction' and electrons trying to force their way through. Water...

Which DIY Cmoy is better: JDS or Tangent?

Quote:   Perfboard is definitely a learning curve.   I personally have a bit of trouble coming up with a really effective layout, putting the schematic in my mind into reality, so often have jumpers going everywhere and just sort of add things on here and there.

    will cat5e cabling work

Quote: It wouldn't be aluminium, only see that on MV/HV cabling. Steel is highly unlikely, you can get copper clad steel in cables but it would be extremely unlikely in a headphone cable. Doubtful it is silver as well. If it has a silver coloured appearance it would likely be 'tinned'...

How to control power of two or more devices

I'm getting a bit off topic here.   But I think the hifi companies need to wake up and develop some sort of controller for your hifi/av/TV etc.   Even programmable remotes are fraught with problems, it should be as simple as, I just saw some funny clip of a bunny on youtube, I want that...

Well I don't speak french but I see "2 conducteurs" which would explain it. Personally I don't know about using the shield, looks like foil not braid to me? Are there any 'drain wire/s' ? Otherwise I don't see foil working too well, too flimsy and not as good as a copper braid for...

    New Millett Hybrid Maxed Amp

Is the only concern the plugpack taking up space ? I do occasionaly see 24v AC transformers with a short mains lead, then a small plastic housing.
