I ended up getting some. They fit fine, ANC seems seems pretty good, main complaint is that the headband is a bit uncomfortable. Probably keeping them though, since I read you have to step up to the Bose or Sony's to get noticeably better ANC, and those are ~$300.

Cool. From the review I linked it seemed like actual height was key. I appreciate the scientific explanation. Wedges are less offending on all three fronts (space, stability, aesthetics) so I would consider those.

Ok cool. Makes sense. I am also doing a new build within the next 9 months and will try to put a good sound card in it so I will have decent analog out. At that point I would only need the amp, so maybe I do want separate ones even if it's clunkier at the moment.

Thanks for the advice. Any particular reason you recommend getting separate DAC and amp? Is it just because both in one is hard to find cheap?
