In a word:  Soundstage.  The hd800 might give you a bit more detail than the th900, but I think that depends quite a bit on what amp/dac you have. 

I believe it means they are changing the transformers.  Amorphous core presumably means they are using an amorphous (non-crystalline) core material for the transformer.  I don't know what that does in terms of the sound produced.  Based on my experience with Craig, though, it will sound fantastic!

I don't think you can go wrong either way!  I was listening to my 2a3 last night with TH900s and even after listening to the amp almost every day for 10 months it still completely blows me away with how good it sounds.  

Wow.  A balanced TH900?  I wonder if it could possibly sound better than my SE version.  The ears boggle.

Although it's just a bit above your budget, I think the Woo Audio WA7 is a good choice with these cans.  I had the combo for a while and it was awesome.  Woo amps are on sale for this week, putting the WA7 at $900 and free shipping.

I was just checking the Woo site and I don't see their CD transport anywhere.  Does anyone know if they discontinued it?
