Sennheiser HD 598 Impressions Thread
It is a long time since I sent in a suggestion for equalizing the Hd598 in Foobar 2000. Well now I have joined the boom and tizz brigade and bumped up the bass a bit and added some sparkle to compensate my top end hearing loss. I think that the bump at 1-2kHz helps with the 'veil'. The eq...- doktorsteve

I had a friends HD600s for a few months when I first got my HD598s (yes really). I compared them quite a few times so I know that the HD600s bring out details the the HD598s don't. They also seem to have better timbre and clarity for acoustic instruments - violins etc. I attributed a lot of...- doktorsteve

The critical thing is the output impedance of the amp. An output impedance below 6 ohms is going to hide any effect of the bass resonance. The FIIO E6 has an output impedance below 1 ohm so the bass peak is irrelevant. A high output impedance like 50 ohm will cause a small bump in the upper bass.- doktorsteve

Lord Voldemort, your comment about losing high end hearing and becoming tolerant to bright headphones may not be entirely correct. In my experience as I get older I get less tolerant of high sound levels at rock concerts. Where the sound engineer thinks that 100 dB is comfortable, for me the...- doktorsteve

Ignore that suggestion. Looks like you can only EQ it a bit.- doktorsteve

LoveKnight can you change your output opamp(s) to NMJ4556A ? The spec is not great but at low gains they really deliver into low impedance loads. They are used in the the O2 in parallel pairs but you do not need so much drive for HD598s so singles will do. For me they also delivered...- doktorsteve

I compared the equalized HD598 with the the HD600s last night and they seem pretty close tonally. But hey what do I know - you may disagree. Mid 50s. Nothing above 12k. Mild tinnitus (the sensitivity is down and the gain is up for high frequencies). I could be trying to compensate for...- doktorsteve

Here is my latest eq for the Graphic Equalizer DSP for Foobar 2k. The small lift above 5k gives a bit of crispness. I also tried the Crossfeed DSP and that seems to give a bit more depth after a while. I will just give the HD600s back and enjoy the HD598s- doktorsteve

Interesting comment. I think that you cannot escape the acoustics of the theatre even at that distance. A performer will adjust his or her performance depending on the acoustic even though they are on top of their instrument. You have to remember that most recordings are not made binaurally...- doktorsteve

In reply to Krutsch I would say that the equalised sound is fine for me. For me the HD600 comes into its own when playing classical music. The problem is that I do not go to many classical concerts and the HD600 only sounds like I think that the classical instruments should sound but I...- doktorsteve

Lets not get too euphoric about these headphones. I have been listening to a friends HD600s. At first I thought that they were pretty boring but I can really appreciate the mid range tones, the dryness of acoustic guitars and lots of other subtleties. Its kind of destructive because...- doktorsteve

Why the Sennheiser HD598s are considered the best headphones in the world. Sennheiser HD598 review.
This has probably meen mentioned before. These phone need equalising to bring out their best. I tried a few frequency sweeps and I could hear there is a dip at 1.8kHz and a peak around 3-4kHz. I also felt that I needed a bit of boost above 5kHz. I used the 24 band graphic equaliser add on...- doktorsteve

These need a lot of burn in. After using mine for a couple of hours a day for 2 months I think I can still hear improvements in the level of bass and male vocals are becoming more natural (not quite HD600 yet). Some have said that 50 hours is needed. I like these headphones because I can either...- doktorsteve

Brief Odac impressions
Hey, why don't you try swapping the opamps and tell us what you think? Just power down without turning the volume knob then swap and power up again. I think you will be surprised by the difference between the NMJ2068 and the LM4562. The difference seems out of proportion to the amount of work...- doktorsteve

Brief Odac impressions
Humble pie time. To test my modification to the ODAC I wired 1k and 220R resistors to a switch and flicked between them. Even knowing reasonably well which resistor I was listening to ( I only checked the function of the switch later) I was not able to detect any difference between the...- doktorsteve
