Chord Hugo

Again, don't confuse DoP (which is what the Hugo accepts via USB or coax/toslink to see native DSD files from a player) with what the Hugo (and 95% of all DSD-capable DACs that don't use a one-bit chip like Playback Design or EMM/Meitner or the new PS Audio, or does no chip decoding but simply analog filtering like the Lampizator) does with DSD internally.  It decimates it to PCM (so crossfeed, volume, etc can work..) but then manipulates and upsamples at such high sample rates that it makes DSD sound wonderful.  Don't sweat it, just listen.

I agree, if it sounds good, don't worry about the technicalities.

I think one of the reasons many people like DSD is that it sounds less "digital" than PCM. Given that the Hugo reproduces music, at least from my impressions, in a way that is less "digital"-sounding than other DACs, I agree that whether or not the music is CD quality or anything else I find rather irrelevant during playback because it all sounds so good.

I would like a min of 64gb of storage with a player cable of the DSD, Flac, wav and other formats listed above  In addition to at least 4 hours of run time before I need to charge the playback device.

sounds like you are describing a Sony F887... sounds exactly the same as ZX1, it also has all the file formats you need and can do WiFi & Bluetooth, it has 64gb of memory and will last a minimum of 12hours playback wise... it measures 12.5cm x 6.5 it's 1cm wide with leather case on and cost about $400.

Hugo is great because it can reproduce music in excellent quality regardless of digital formats.
I read a local impression of munich high end show and the guy preferred AK120II over AK240. The AK rep in the show said AK240 would perform better for dsd and the filmsy balance output. Its so limiting

I am looking to better use of my ipad mini. Do I just buy a CCK and then use the stock music player to play music? Like 16/44 wav file
Or i need to buy the onkyo software from itune?

Yes get the CCK and if you wanna play DSD, FLAC or anything above 16/48 then you'll need the Onkyo HF Player, otherwise the stock player is fine.

You would need this one:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter?fnode=54162d4e0168c2d2fb086c5616026dc5b765b9de02eb72f204e04615ec79b8c2553ac84611e1ffdadff724eb8c85c3640fa197f078665ac64ed884d29adbf8faed65341813b75af55f92a5e0c68c9146924c5cb29689cbaa914b91546162c78c0b185bc33e01744ec00f04ac4859bcad

And apart from that you don't need that much.. other than a player.
8Player can do bit perfect streaming (if you use ALAC files instead of FLAC, and it can also do DSD streaming if you make your own ALAC files with DSD embedded).

The Onkyo app can do "everything" if you upgrade to "hig res" or something, but it can't do streaming from an UPnP / DLNA server.

Your Hugo will play whatever you are playing on your iPad.. and it will not be a problem using the built in player to play your 16/44.1 music as long as you convert to ALAC. (I am using dbPowerAmp (Windows app) for such tasks).
If you don't convert to ALAC you might experience upsampling or down sampling to 16/48.

Food for thought. How many here feel with the Hugo or any other dcs they feel they do not hear an improvement with dsd over red book PCM.
Next is red book PCM compared to 24/192.
The above is files downloaded not up sampled . But down sampling the same file lower in comparison .

I haven't tried AK120II, but the Balanced connector of AK240 is well made and sturdy in connection.

With the wifi hdd you would need the 8Player to make it work, as the wifi hdd will have a mini DLNA server installed and stream your music. The other players need local access to your files, and players like PlugPlayer can stream, but doesn't play hig res files bit perfect.

My questions:
  • I just don't know what portable source device to connect to it.?  Suggestions are welcome
  • Also if you suggest something please tell me what type of connectors I will need to make it work?
  • I heard you need a USB connector to play DSD.   Is this true?
  • Can you play DSD source via the optical or coax cable?
  • Is the coax cable better regarding  SQ then the optical cable is?
  • I would like a min of 64gb of storage with a player cable of the DSD, Flac, wav and other formats listed above  In addition to at least 4 hours of run time before I need to charge the playback device.

My IEM are the Shure SE-846...
Thank you in advance...

I really depends on what your need/want.

1. If minimal no. of items is intended, an IPhone with the lightning kit would be great.  DSD is support with the Onkyo software.  However, the storage is limited.  (assuming that you need a smartphone)
2. If minimal no. of items is intended, Note3 would be good that supports 128GB microSD and at least 16GB internal storage.  I guess it should work with the 32GB model.  The software for Note3 is of sluggish interface and not able to handle DSD.  The supplied OTG cable from Hugo is good enough for the Hi Rez files.  You have to connect Note3 to Hugo and then start the software.  For 16/48 files, the standard player on Note3 will do.

3. If one more item is allowed, you may try X5.  In principal it can handle two 256GB SD cards and supports coaxial output.  Seeteeyou has a post on it.  I'm told that X5 is not a great source for Hugo but haven't tried it myself.
AK(optical), 901(coaxial), and other players possible with different connectors

4. The ultimate storage to feed the HUG at the moment should be the Seagate wireless 2TB mobile disk with an Ipad or something similar.  Other head-fiers has post the information for this setup.

Hope this helps.
