Need a suggestion for my wife under $150 (first pair of phones)

By on-ear, I'm assuming you mean supra-aural earphones (those resting on the ears) and not circumaural (around the ear). Correct? And as far as good on-ear phones are concerned, I can't think of better than the sennheiser px200-ii. It offers good sound for the money, good isolation for a...

Concise Multi-IEM Comparison (FINAL UPDATE March. 1st, 2013)

Ah, local stores that sell IEMs. In my area of the world, that is a pipe dream at best. I can only imagine how much fun it would be to have a local store nearby like the so called "headphone heaven" in Hong Kong. And the ability to audition (!) IEMs on the premises...maybe it's time to plan a...

    The I'm Bored Silly Thread

Bored, pfft. It's time you pick up a good book. There's always something interesting to read out there. Turn on some music, grab a book, and enjoy. :)   Just be like the picture.

    Cheapest Sport Breathable "Healthy" Headphones

For sporty headphones that don't isolate and are supremely comfortable, I heartily recommend the sennheiser px100. I've tried both the older model and the new px100-ii and recommend the original version. Sound quality is virtually the same between the two. The px100-ii has better build quality...

Sennheiser PX200-II - any opinions on these?

Quote: Quote: Remember, however, that part of the px200-ii's appeal lies with its ultra-portability. You can literally fold it up and stick it into a trouser pocket. The above headphones are all much larger and require a dedicated bag/case for traveling. So they're targeted at...

What customs are right for me?

Quote: To me, timbre is better defined by all the various qualities of sound excluding frequency response. It allows you to differentiate different instruments. So for instance, if you have a violin and a cello play the exact same note, you'd be able to tell the two apart. Moreover, if...

    Shure SE215 Review

Quote: That's it exactly. If you browse the appreciation thread, you'll find multiple reports of left or right channels going out randomly. Now, to Shure's credit, they've been great about warranty support. Not a single poster complained that the company left them hanging. Nonetheless, I'm...

    Shure SE215 Review

Thanks for the detailed review mark. I was actually considering trying the se215 for a while, but the reports of shoddy build quality, as well as the super long cable, memory wire, and rotating connectors scared me away. They just appear to be really hard to fit. Nonetheless, they look like they...

    VSonic GR07: Exquisitely Balanced

esanthosh, great review. It was a very informative read. If you could though, would you mind briefly comparing the gr07 to your PFE? I'm especially interested in how the gr07's dynamic range compares, as the PFE has the best dynamics I've yet heard in an IEM.

    Comply Foam Tips Appreciation Thread

To quote dfkt, since his posts are just so wonderfully blunt:   My opinion on the matter: Comply are unscrupulous gangsters that hold the patent on how to attach the tip's inner plastic tube to the foam surrounding them. Because of that patent they bullied all the competition off the market...

Shure se215 vs Phonak Audeo 012, need help, buying tomorrow!!

How much bass do you want? If you want big bass with a good amount of warmth (~200-400Hz boost) then pick the se215. If you prefer a lighter hitting though more detailed bass that still extends all the way down to 20Hz pick the PFE. Personally, while I do find my PFEs bass light, the problem can...

    [Review] Sunrise SW-Xcape Impressive Edition

Quote: Agreed. I think James444 ended up saying pretty much the same thing, that he ultimately preferred the ex1000 over the fx700 due mostly to musical preferences, rather than absolute technical merits.

Still feel that SQ could get better?(Plateau?)

Of course it can get better. Just pup on a good set of fullsize cans, then put on a good set of IEMs. Though the IEMs do have certain advantages, overall the fullsize cans blow the latter out of the water. Sadly for us, this means that the upgraditis but won't abate any time soon.

Rockboxed Fuze froze and died the next day

Try charging it for a bit. Then hold the power button down for 30-40 seconds. Wait some 5 seconds, then press the power button again.

My RE0's Broke. Need a new pair of in ears, on a budget though.

In that case, I'd suggest either the soundmagic pl50 or the maximo im-590. The pl50 is more user friendly, but the im-590 sounds a bit better.

My RE0's Broke. Need a new pair of in ears, on a budget though.

If you want analytical, I'd suggest the phonak pfe. If you use the coupon code "h15" at soundearphones, you can get them for $118. They are analytical like the RE0, only better, as they fix two of its greatest flaws. Where the RE0 has a sharp bass rolloff resulting in a defacto midbass hump, the...

    Panasonic RP-HJE900 Zirconia Review

Quote: The SA6 cable is thinner, and generally smaller. Thus it allows for a deeper insertion, and hopefully a better seal. Expecting an improvement in sound quality as a result is not unreasonable.

Audio Technica M50 vs Sennheiser HD-25

@danimoca How exactly are you planning on using your headphones. If you're only going to use them for an hour or two at a time, then the clamping force of the hd25-ii can be taken in stride. If however you're going to have the headphones on for hours at a time, then I'd stay away from the...

    Mini-Review: digiZoid ZO "portable subwoofer"

Does anyone know what the best price of the ZO is? The cheapest I've seen is $99. Is that the best, or is there better? Also, is there going to be a v2 ZO coming out? Since if that is the case, I'll probably just wait a bit, and end up ordering the v1 when it comes under discount.

My Monster Turbine Copper Pro Sounds Like Ibuds

Are you getting a good seal? Try playing around with the various tips. The most common cause of problems that new users have with IEMs stems from a poor seal. It'll make the bass disappear, and everything will sound tinny. Again, try a larger size of silicone tips, or if that fails one of the...

    Replacement for RE0

When I used the re0 I don't remember being impressed with the bass extension. In point of fact, they had a rather sharp rolloff in the low bass, resulting in a defacto mid-bass hump of sorts. But the death knell of the re0's for me was their dynamics - or more accurately, the utter lack thereof...

    Westone 4: Questions

Remember though, when comparing, make sure it's a blind test (ABX). foobar2000 has a great ABX extension you can add on. Works like a charm. For what it's worth, hearing the difference between V0 mp3 (same as 320, but half the size) and FLAC is incredibly difficult. I've done it, but only on a...
