I was when I had my Sony DNF-400 with my pimeta and portapros, it was a nice combination, not high end by any means but it made me rock out. Then that broke and I got a DNF-430 through the warranty but that doesn't benefit from an amp at all, so my pimeta is now in my comp rig. Anyway, yeah...

I voted vinyl, but it really depends on the type of music imo. For classic rock, nothing is better than that old vinyl sound. However for metal and such I prefer digital. I find metal sounds like crap on my vinyl setup. Not to mention most metal vinyl are hard to find or overpriced.

I also think its the source. I can't stand my K240S through my discman, a DNS400, even with my pimeta, it sounds pretty bad, no bass, horrible highs. However, I love my 240s through my emu 1212m, they sound so awesome.
