ZMF x Vibro & ZMF Blackwood Discussion Thread.

Cocobolo and Bocote have been added for the ZMF Blackwood:  http://www.zmfheadphones.com/order-the-zmf/zmf-blackwood-1

Wood description:

  1. Bocote:  Close to Blackwood with a touch of decay added and beautiful detailed yet easy going mids.  Bocote has a very nice oomph that is super natural because of the added wood pore size over blackwood.   Very resolving and musical.
  2. Cocobolo:  A hard true rosewood, with small pores and good density.  Good air, presence and girth, but with inviting warmth and engagement.  A beautiful nature with a sound that's best described as liquid.

They both turned out really neat, personally I find myself reaching for my Bocote set the most, but they both offer a slight tonal magic that I'm sure might be placebo because they are so beautiful.  The Blackwood is every bit as good as the Omni IMHO but in closed headphone form and a little easier to build for me (hence the price).  It's also the most graphically neutral of the ZMF's, with a slight downslope and sub-bass kick.  I hope you guys enjoy these I really love how these wood look in this shape!

Well I'm going to be a new member to the club. I have a pair of vibro's on order. I hope I get a good synergy with one of my two amps.

Slick! Just a suggestion though, on that page with the individual thumbnails for all the different wood options, maybe add mouse-over descriptions as well?

Well, that Bocote is positively gorgeous! Nice work, Zach!

So, Zach, I personally want to thank you in a public forum for making astounding planar sound available to mere plebeians like myself. I am enamored with my Vibros!

Thank you and thank you!  It makes the long hours worth it when I know ZMF owners are enjoying my headphones.    I think your set may be the new face of my Vibro page?

Wow, it totally is! I'm honored. You did a really great job on that finish, Zach. Cheers!

Any recommendations for the best amp to pair these headphones with?

I have the xonar essence STX and i'm not sure if it would be the best pair.

Zach had a JDS Element at the Connecticut meet. Was a fantastic experience and is what led me to join this Massdrop. With that being said, does anyone have more experience with amping these? I currently have an O2 (1x and 2.5x gain) and am wondering if that will be enough.

From what I've heard, the JDS Element is a bit overpriced for it's performance when you specifically look at audio quality.

Correct me if i'm wrong though

What's your budget?

There are a lot of amps that pair well with these, but the most important thing you'll want is POWER.  So for instance, if you were looking to get a cheap tube amp, the Project Ember puts out much more power than the Project Solstice for not much more money.  You might be tempted to save a few bucks and go for the Solstice, but the Ember would be the better choice.  Etc.

Some amps that I've heard it with that are good:  Liquid Carbon, Liquid Crimson, microZOTL2 + LPS, JDS Labs Element (this is a DAC/Amp)

$300 would be my budget..

I'd prefer not to spend that much if possible. I do know the JDS Lab Element does fall in my range $350.

What would be the cheapest one though?

The Element or the Project Ember are both close to your budget.  You might be able to find a cheap used Schiit Lyr 2, which I hear is a decent pairing.  I honestly haven't spent a lot of time with these on cheaper amps so I don't have much first-hand experience to recommend beyond that.  The Gustard H10 has a lot of punch for the money and folks seem to like it.

The NUforce HA-200 is now on Massdrop for a very nice price. It drives my ZMF with ease.
