ZMF x Vibro & ZMF Blackwood Discussion Thread.

So I pulled the trigger on a set of Blackwoods one of the used cups or how I like to think of them "recycled" by ZMF. He listed them today for $529 how could I resist. If you have been thinking about a set like me it's a good time to jump on the Vibro or Blackwood. Now the waiting.......

I wonder if a driver upgrade would be worth it.

The driver in the Vibro MK II is actually the same, it's just the baffle that has changed and the paper used on the back of the driver.  It does make a difference, and I did some different things in the mod to take advantage of the changes made to the baffle.  It's hard to say for each specific person if the MKII would be an upgrade or not, some will like the added neutrality and soundstage the MK II brings, some will like the slightly thicker more robust sound of the MK I.

Ok thanks :)

The monarchy nm24 makes the vibro as detailed as the pulse makes the 560. It is fantastic synergy. Very high energy though. I'm gonna try the solid state out tonight after work . Now that the unit is hot it is much more musical and working the H10 gain settings has made it a much better pairing.

Hi, everyone

Are these headphones good paring with hm901+balanced card?
I listen to classical music a lot, which one suits better?
Thanks

no idea about the amp, but to these ears, the blackwood does incredibly well with strings, brass, and piano timbre.

They are driven very well by a geek out v2. That's only 1w. It's one of my favorite things to hear the vibro with. It's bass oriented and chaotic sounding in that combo but I really like it as a change up

Thanks. On paper, the balanced card outputs 477 mw for each driver

That's definitely plenty of power for volume, as anything over 200MW at 32 ohms will be fine, I haven't heard it but would assume it runs headphones like the he500 well since it's made by hifiman. The ZMFs are about the same difficulty to drive as the he500.

That's fantastic. I currently use a pair of Sony Z5 earbuds to listen to primarily classical music with HM901, I found the treble harsh, some instruments can be blown out and swallow up others, and the imaging oscillating somehow. I cannot enjoy orchestra out of that combination(but they are not bad rendering pop music, which i listen only half-heartedly).

As I listen to music a lot during traveling, sealing is a very important factor. I did some research, and wonder that ZMF Blackwood may be the right one for me. But there is one thing I haven't found being mentioned, how much does a pair Brazilian Rosewood weigh(which is absolutely gorgeous by the way)? I had a pair of Pandora Hope Vi before, but owing to its near 500 gram weight and shallow earpads, I reluctantly sold them.

I used to wear my Paradox to the grocery store. People treat you like you're wearing the Ant-Man costume. That is...until you pull out the portable amp you're carrying to drive it properly. Then they treat you like a domestic terrorist.

I know it's totally off topic, but, I cannot refrain myself from laughing out loud.

The Brazilian sets are around 480-510g while the Blackwood sets are around 540-560g.  I don't get many complaints about weight, as with the pilot pad and/or leather band they seem to distribute weight well.  The Zebra Wood Blackwood sets that I am getting in this week may be a touch lighter, I'll have pictures up of them in the next 7-10 days.

A little Zebra Wood (Blackwood model) preview, I'll have pics up next week of the first completed Zebra set. Of note, they are about 20g lighter per cup than Brazilian, so:

Blackwood: 530-560 g total
Brazilian: 490-520 g total
Zebra: 450-490 g total

I see this, and I immediately think of kek lapis (for everyone who doesn't know what that is: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spekkoek )

Delicious! :p
