VOs and Z1Rs are my choice too, great complement. Z1Rs for big orchestral, VOs for most else!
Hmm, I would actually put the VOs for orchestral before the Z1Rs. While I love the Z1Rs, they have a weird tonality on high notes on strings that is piercing and unnatural-sounding.

It is most noticeable in this song at 2:06.

Also, the VO does a way better job in detail retrieval for some really subtle non-emphasized fluttering violins starting around 1:12.

I think the VOs are better at everything, but that’s just my take.

I've only had my VO for a few weeks, and we're definitely still in the honeymoon phase "getting to know each other", but so far I'm finding I prefer VO for almost everything except classical/orchestral. I still think HD800S takes the cake for classical/orchestral. I find myself reaching for VO more often for jazz, though, which totally surprises me.

I never quite get warm to Z1R either.... maybe my general experience on closed backs, somehow they are bit disjointed and boomy.... just my personal opinion

You should listen to the Eikon. It's an interesting beast. It is closed back but has an enormous soundstage. To my ears it's a bit v-shaped,too. That makes it a fun departure from the Verite.

I like the Auteur solid pads for the larger stage on the Eikon.

Does anyone know of a comparison of the regular and magnesium chassis?

The website only says “The upgraded magnesium chassis is painted, not anodized, and may wear over time.”
I've had both now. A magnesium set came on the used Eikon I purchased. They were pretty nicked up when I received them. Because of that, I purchased the aluminum on my Verite Open. Take all that with a fat grain of salt. I don't know how the prior owner treated the Eikon I purchased second-hand.

I do personally like the look of the black aluminum with the desert ironwood.

At the end of the day, anodized finish is stronger than painted finish. However, the magnesium frame is lighter weight, and that means a lot or a little depending on the listener. I like the weight with the aluminum and heavy cups...it's like a warm blanket.

We have been discussing this quite a bit in the VC thread and the basic comparison is:

Aluminium - Heavier but more durable finish

Magnesium - Lighter but less durable finish

Considering there is only a 34g difference between the two I would go for durability every day and have ordered an aluminium chassis to replace the magnesium my VC came with.

4 of my 5 are magnesium. I take care of them, keep them on Salire stands and am very careful not to bump the metal parts against anything. Very rarely I've had little specks of paint missing, maybe 2-3 total across all of them and they disappear with a touch up pen pretty easily. The 34g makes a big difference for me so I've usually upgraded to it if not stock.

Thanks. So it comes down to durability and weight.
I’ve been looking at the ironwood, if I understand the ZMF chart it’s the heaviest wood. After the LCDs I’m really trying to avoid another heavy headphones.
The thought of “this heavy thing on my head” is always there when listening. If that makes any sense

I won't try to dissuade you but...never mind. I'm going to be contrarian!

Every headphone wears its weight differently. The VO Desert Ironwood are heavy, but they don't feel heavy on the head with the headband properly adjusted. I've had lighter headphones which felt heavier. That said, if it is a big concern, the VO in silkwood (or olive) with Magnesium is actually pretty lightweight.

+1 for me as well. I was worried about the weight of the VO Desert Ironwood but it has not been a problem for me at all. I use it with the Pilot Pad and I almost forget its on my head.

A tip for anyone that finds their ZMF headphones a bit on the heavy side is to switch out the leather head strap for the suede strap. It helps with comfort and weight distribution ime.
