ZMF Caldera - New Planar Magnetic from ZMF!
Sep 18, 2022 at 11:20 PM Post #301 of 7,609
I realized earlier today that the impedance every time I checked the amp was chnaged, the planar sounded far far better on low impedance and the dynamics on medium or high.
Yup I think with that said and the fact that I absolutely adore what the Airmid does that it will be an Atrium around tax time. I love the idea of going back to a Planar and all that makes them so amazing!

There are so many things the Airmid is remarkable at and I need to go other directions rather than buying another amplifier even if Keenan does make a triode strapped xfmr coupled beauty that will make the Caldera sing! I also get the impression from a few comments that the mids may still be better on the Atrium as well as the overall space and staging.

So I will look towards an LTD Atrium next year around tax time. Macassar or Blackwood, either wood be fine, I imagine the density is pretty close on those two woods! What about porosity? Either with copper fittings, particularly aged, and a slight copper brown bull hide head strap would be just perfect.

This would be the perfect shade for the gimbals and headband end pieces. Ralph Lauren Etruscan. Now I start saving and once the tax returns, then we are golden!

Happy dreaming,

jgwtriode

The thing I most look forward to in future ZMF, is something quite high resolution and snappy. Not sure if that can work in with the ZMF timbre or not, but can hope.
Verite?

I had to go back and check and when the Envy was on low impedance it was just not right at all. Switched it to medium and it was clear that's what I must have had it on yesterday.

I realized earlier today that the impedance every time I checked the amp was chnaged, the planar sounded far far better on low impedance and the dynamics on medium or high.

Thanks guys for clearing that up. Reading other reviews regarding the two made me look like the true odd guy out.

RRP $3.5k, maybe $3.7-3.8k for limited wood editions.... i always lurk around year or 2 after the release to get the desired wood for all my ZMFs

Will do some impressions when I get home tomorrow. I travelled very far just to get a hand picked pair, hear the Airmid, as well as meet Zach and Bevin. I spent 3-4 hours in the zmf room alone out of the 5-6 hours I was at the convention. Great times! Thanks Zach and Bevin for being so cool and providing such a warm welcome. Cheers everyone!

This exchange, along with others about the impedance settings on the Envy leads me to wonder if OTL amps don’t pair well with the Caldera (as you’d expect from a planar).

I just mentioned this in the main thread but I'll elaborate here, ampsandsound used daps as their source into the nautilus and other amazingly punchy amps, the daps just don't do those amps justice.

The first thing most people mentioned in our room at Canjam about the Caldera is the punch/slam/weight of the sound. This isn't me trying to pitch the Caldera as good or bad, as I almost fear the Caldera is too intense for some people, it's just what I noticed when I dropped the Caldera off at ampsandsound, and then compared to the full sized sources that output 2v to 6v in our room. Listening to @L0rdGwyn amps with the Lina was almost like being run over by a truck and I worried people would find the Caldera crazy sounding, so we turned the voltage down after someone had adjusted it to 6v down to 2v.

Damn! Goodbye kilobucks, that was the only thing holding me back.

Zach, what’s your view on how the Caldera pairs with an OTL like the Euforia? Does it have enough current?
Damn! Goodbye kilobucks, that was the only thing holding me back.

Well - OTLs sound OK with them and the mods can be beautiful, but if you want Co trol and slam, OTC designs are where it's at.

And please don't take my word for it I'm sure many other people will chime in soon with how the slam/control is on their own systems. The Caldera being a little more current hungry and 65 ohms does change a little more system to system than some of the other very low impedance drivers out there.

Minor thing, but the newer suede material on the Caldera is even more comfortable. Almost feels like silk merged with suede.
