ZMF Aeolus Impressions thread

I got a pair from dealer in Finland. Promised I can return for refund if I'm not pleased and headphones are in mint condition so I was willing to give them a go. I've heard so much good and I was also thinking Verite Closed but a poor assembly worker made decision to get the Aeolus with Camphor Burl wood. I have atm Ether CX and M1060c modded open.

I mostly concider M1060c as VR-set headphones. They have few marks and work well with Vive's audio jack. But short comment with Aeolus. I thought they would be bass cannons but not that much. I love the bass with stock pads, perf velours did make them more neutral but I got excellent closed, neutral cans with the CX. Universal cowhides made these to bass cannons. Damn these have bass if needed; the pads now on CX because they are million times better than og CX pads.

These had adjustment rods ball-spring -combinations' screw's socket broken. Doesn't affect as they are adjusted good, I know also the mechanics through. I'm gonna ask the seller about that.

But otherwise these are excellent and I think with Ether CX nice neutral tonality these two will be good pair to own.

Friendly reminder to ZMF owners, the ball spring plungers/screw that is in your upright is not adjustable as we set the tension and then thread lock it. Trying to adjust it will likely result in breaking the flat head portion of the ball end plunger. So yes, best to just set it and forget it! :gs1000smile:

Thanks for answering Zach. I can link this answer to the email too. I don't know if the seller tried to adjust it but it was sent to me like this. Good that they are also threadlocked like other parts, I don't need to worry about it down the line.

My god that looks even better than what I've previously seen.

The suede strap arrived by DHL and I can say it was an improvement in comfort and completely fixed the issue of my head hitting the headband because of the too long leather strap. I also have to say that it does effect the fit by quite a lot - just as Zach and Bevin said. I think I went from the third smallest size to the second largest or largest, so beware if you have a larger head.

I did also have a massive scare. I didn't realise that the screws that hold the strap on also keep the headband itself attached to the yoke assemblies. I guess I didn't tighten them enough, or the headband had managed to move to an off position - but in any case, the entire headband came off when I was daily cleaning them with a lint roller. First one side, then the other. After a minor stroke, I started investigating the issue and tried to unscrew the strap, put the headband ends back to their slots, and then struggled to screw the strap back in while holding the headband in place. In the end it all worked out, and now I know how it works.

I just wanted to let you all know so that you can avoid making this mistake - be careful to keep the headband in place when replacing the strap, and make sure to properly tighten the screws (turn them until there's a clear stop - that's how it was for me). I have to say that for a moment my heart completely stopped beating. :dt880smile:

Edit: Corrected a brainfart.

I appreciate the beauty of the workmanship and the wood, but I wonder why some of these limited edition woods look so shiny lacquered in the pictures. Are they like this when seen in person?

It is so hard to get a picture of these that do them justice. This one got a bit closer.
I can only imagine how incredible they look in person, my Sapele and I are a bit jealous.

It's a bit more matte in person. The lacquer adds depth to the wood and makes it pop. To me, it's perfect.
