amp later... probably the travagan white amp. this headphone is gonna be for music and movies. comfort is madadory... dont wanna cut up the ear pads or do any recableing.... for now.

music=metal and classical
movies= horror, and war

budget= no more than $350

Beyerdynamic DT880
denon d200
ultrasone 780

I would choose the ultrasone having not heard any of these because the other two are sometimes described as having recessed mids, which would not be good for metal. I think they beyers would be the most comfortable though.

I didn't end up liking the sound very much (although I did at first), but the DT-880s were some of the darned comfiest phones I've ever had on my head. They would work well for classical and movies (great for war movie sound effects), although I'm not sure how well they would do with metal.

I'm sitting here with some Ultrasone pro900's on my head and the mids are indeed much more forward the Denons or Byers. but i can't confirm that little ultra brother is as good in the mids as big daddy

D2000 or D5000.

You can probably snag the D5000 for $350 if you have a little patience and look around (I got mine for $368 shipped).

AKG K601
Audio Technica AD700

Thing about the beyers is they're rather picky about amplification. They're very bright to begin with and they will sound awful with the wrong amp.

Get woodies from headphile.....with the magnetic covers for the screens.......listening to classical take the cover off, listening to metal put the cover on for a closed cup sound.

Give some thought to the Sony MDR-7509HD. I got a pair this week and have been impressed by them so far. They run around $200 and they aren't Grados.

But they do have a bit of a forward sound and plenty of bass.

I'd recommend the DT880, but not until you have a decent amp for them.

Seems like your music choices are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Perhaps 2 sets of headphones are in order. If not then it seems to me that both genre's will be compromised.

This one is easy.

DT880, no question for me here. If you need closed get the D2000, but the D2000 still doesn't have the awesomeness that an open-air can does.

Lots of people rave about the AKG 501, may be worth a look see.
