Wazzup, guys?! Haven't posted here in awhile. It's my birthday today...and I'm living in a house now!
Dang. New MT220s are over $400 on Amazon now. Sucks 'cause I only paid $150 for a new one back in the day.
So has anyone equalized their MT220 using guides like the ones in my signature?
If I ever buy another MT220, I'd love to equalize it for the most accurate frequency response possible, as well as modify it further for even better sound.
Tyll @ InnerFidelity recently posted measurements of the MT220: http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/YamahaHPHMT220.pdf
Noice!
The bass is even more boosted than I realized. As far as neutrality goes, that's way too much bass.
Looks similar to the M50x measurements:

(The bass is supposed to follow the green line. All planar magnetic headphones I know of follow the green line in the bass.)
Thankfully, unlike the M50x (which ironically lacks impact), the boosted bass of the MT220 doesn't muddy up the sound too much; instead, it has great juicy punch and plenty of clarity. So measurements are ultimately only a starting point. I did notice with both of those headphones, though, that the bass makes the mids sound more recessed.
I'd be interested in seeing measurements of the MT220 with other pads, as well as various modifications.
The most neutral headphone I've heard is the STAX SR-207. Nothing stands out noticeably and everything sounds natural. Can't say that for any other headphone I've heard so far.

Just curious...why did you get rid of your high-end STAX?
Guys this thread has gone very quiet perhaps because people are so engrossed in their Yams.
Has anybody found anything as good or better, near or above its price range.
Any links to any threads where the action is would be very useful!
The MT220 is still my favorite closed headphone.
The open STAX SR-207 is way better and sounds more like real instruments, but is considerably more expensive. The US retail price of the entry-level system (with SRM-252S amp) is $790. It can be imported from Japan for around $500. I got a used system (with SRM-212 amp, which has the same circuit as the SRM-252S) for a little over $300, but I got lucky.
I'm also still loving the semi-open Koss KTXPRO1. Although the MT220 is better overall, the KTX does certain things better.
