Good pairs of those two may now cost over $500. Are there substitutes getting close to the performance but cost under $250? I am looking into Tungsol/chatham 6AS7G, 7236, Svetlana 6H13C, maybe Mullard 6080 etc. Do they work well with WA22? I had these with Euforia before. I liked Chatham 6AS7G, but not as good as 5998/421a when I had them.

I am also looking at GEC A2293 that CAJames recommended. The challenge part is to find a matched quad.
Yes, I’ve had success with NOS Mullard (50’s and 60’s), Svetlana winged-C are excellent newer tubes, and 60s Chatham 6as7g (I’ve got several of those as well) are very good. I couldn’t comment on pricing, as I bought my sets years ago.

Toshiba 6080 tubes might be a good sleeper option for around $150 matched pair. So far my experience with Japanese tubes has been surprisingly good.

Question to 1266 users with WA22. Do you use LO or HI impedance? I notice LO give more relaxed and laid back sound, with depth to soundstage. HI is more aggresive, "in face" sound, forward.

I use LO impedance typically, but I have noticed that with my 6080 tubes, it sounds pretty good on HI. Currently, with 5998 tubes installed, there's more punch in the lows with it set to LO.

@skhan007 what set of tubes you have?
I'm currently running all NOS tubes: United Electric 596 rectifier, CBS brown base 5692 preamp, and Tung-Sol 5998 power tubes. I have several pairs of Tung-Sol 5998 and Chatham 6AS7G power tubes, as this type/family is my favorite. I also have NOS GEC 6080's, which are my favorite in the 6080 (followed closely by my Bendix 6080). The ones I'm currently running are a great match for my Abyss 1266.

Check out this thread and enjoy a few weeks worth of reading! https://www.head-fi.org/threads/6sn7-tube-addicts.479031/

KenRad VT231s will show up repeatedly with praise. As will various Sylvania variants including the "bad boys" and "tall boys".

I personally have settled on a solid, if un-praised by others, pair of Foton 6N8S. And I have a mint and spendy pair of Sylvania 6SN7GTAs NOS in my collection that I think the Fotons rival nicely. There is quite a bit of synergy to explore in your driver/output combo. I prefer my Sylvies with my TungSol 5998s, but my Fotons with my GEC 6080s.

I hesitate to say a solitary opinion by someone else of what is TOTL would be 100% guaranteed to be what YOU would think as best. But good advice can be a good guide.

Good luck and enjoy the rolling!

Anyone tried swapping fuse to some audio grade?

I'm close to order Psvane CV181 tubes.

Anyone can share thoughts on Sophia 6SN7 and Psvane Acme 274b?

You mean bass shy?
no its a dark tube unlike kr audio which can be noisy, microphonic. ps is a loose tubey bass which can be attractive. takatsuki level up in tighter soundstage but wide deep imagery. especially power tubes although rectifier is nice.

Fuses are a controversial topic. I'm using Synergistic Research Orange fuses and think they made a noticeable improvement but FWIW/YMMV and all that. If you are #fusecurious my suggestion is to try a cheap ceramic fuse and see if you can hear any difference. If you can't then you are done. But if you can then you have something to think about.

Is the WA22 fuse size a 5x20mm (0.75in) or 6.3x32mm (1.25in)?
