So has anyone tried connecting to other USB DACs?

Apparently, USB audio is also enabled on factory Samsung Galaxy S III connected to a USB sound stick:

"I just tested one of those cheap PC usb audio sticks with a c-media chipset and it works fine with the SGS3 too. Here's the dmesg output when I plug it in:

Some USB sound sticks:

"The small stick is very contact-friendly: a stereo output to connect to an active speaker system or head set, a microphone input and an optical digital output leave nothing else to be desired. Enjoying music, films and video games in perfect digital sound quality via your AV system."

I should get my SGS3 today or tomorrow, and will immediately order an OTG cable.  I have an E7 and a TubeDac 11 that I'm keen to try to connect to.

If a USB DAC doesn't interwork with the SGS3, please provide some log outputs which could detail what is going on.

dmesg log:

lsusb log:

If these log outputs are tricky, some ALSA USB audio gurus could explain and find out the way to fix an issue:

Heard my E7 has just arrived at home, will be testing tonight :)

I pray it works!

Oh great! I can't really wait to hook my iBasso D6 to SGS3. My SGS3 was supposed to arrive this week but it's been delayed due to the logistics problem whatsoever, but I guess I can get my hands on it at least next week. I'll report here too if D6 works with SGS3.

Does the Fiio E7 sound audibly better than the headphone port ? After a few days how would you grade the hp out?

Thanks

The E7 sounds dramatically better than the headphone port.

I don't actually rate the SQ straight from the headphone port that highly, still have high hopes that Supercurio and Voodoo Sound may well improve that significantly though.

Thank you for your clear reply.

On my iPhone 4S i don't notice a big change when i amp or hook it to an external dac. May be it's because the headphone out is very good on its own to drive my UM3x.

I was wondering if that might be the case for the S3. But it seems that it's not :frowning2:

I've had the European SIII for a week, I use BubbleUPnP for wireless mediastreaming in-house and it works flawless with my Ubuntu/minidlna mediaserver playing all files FLAC etc.. Most other music listening is via Spotify Premium @ Extreme SQ setting. Original sound is a little low in volume(possibly because of strict hearing damage regulations in France).

However, the volume problem was easily circumvented by using the app "Volume+" which is on Play and on the authors homepage. I use version 1.9.0.1 which works with ICS, not all features work but those that count ie raising the volume headroom. The setting I had to use to get enjoyable, and loud, sound from full size cans like Philips SHP8900 and Sony MDR-CD770 which i use was to set the internal Eq in Volume+ to "50" on all bands(neutral) and then raise the apps volume bar to max which is 20. This gives me loud sound without even have to use the max setting on SIII own volume control. Finally I added some low bass punch by raising 60Hz to 60 and 230Hz to 55. This makes the SIII sound like a full size amp with full size cans  :) The raised volume is system wide ie works with all apps that makes sound.

Sound quality is very good, not an par but quite close to a high quality soundcard like Asus Xonar, at least for progressive rock music which is what I listen to the most. And it can sound punchy while clean. Without Volume+ the sound is just too low ...

Voodoo sound(which requires rooting of the device) may provide enhanced sound quality but the fact is, it sounds quite good only by adding one little app(Volume+). Be careful when using it though, the EQ in Volume+ is best to keep neutral(all sliders at 50) otherwise there will be severe coloration of the sound :)

To my ear the E7 sounds clearly better than the iPhone, although not dramatically. I'm using slightly higher impedance headphones in the HD25-1 II and ACS-T15 though, so the extra output from the E7 probably makes quite a difference there.

since the E7 has a lineout too, i could just use its DAC function and use a separate amp? so it's S3-OTG-E7-(E7 lineout)-separate amp, is this possible? thanks

Can't think of any reason that wouldn't work myself...

Will you be using that portably...as that will be a brick! I am even contemplating if the Digizoid ZO2 and the S3 is too big to take out LOL

So this thread went from "zomg it haz a Wolfson DAC it makes me feel funny in my pants" to "oh yeah let's use an external DAC with another Wolfson chip". This is ridiculous…

+1 SQ is great from HP out...from memory I cant see the Fiio E7 being much better and it will turn it into a brick!
