I grew up in rough neighborhoods around some bad people. Stealing usually broke down into 4 categories:
1. They stole because they wanted what you had and they didn't have the money to buy it.
2. Survival (food or clothing only).
3. Kind of an Ego thing, they stole to gain status or lower sombody elses status in the streets. It's hard to explain but if they didn't like you they would steal something (most of the time something they didn't even want) just to make you look bad. If you didn't retaliate everyone would see you as weak and a lot more would get stolen from you. They could also raise there status as being someone not to mess with (stealing was just one part of this as it also involved shootings, fights, narcotics dealing, etc.)
4. Addictions. I've seen some insanely crazy things done by people just to feed their addiction.
