Why aren't Head-fi'ers more excited about the DT990/600?

So the highs are sparkly, I am wondering how are the upper mids in particular with female vocals? The reason I ask is that I read in a thread on the Audio-GD fun this quote from Currawong:

Anyone listening to for example trip-hop with the dt990s?

I listen to Norah Jones and Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, and I have nothing but praise for the way the DT990/600 handles these voices.  Definitley nothing uncomfortable IMHO.  The sound is airy, sparkling and detailed, witout any upper mid sibilance.   I did have some uncomfortable spikes with my old K701's, but not at all with the DT990.

I am a little confused. I read somewhere that both 880 and 990 use the same drivers and the only difference is that 880 is sem-open and 990 is open. If it is true, then how come 990 being an open headphone have more bass impact than the semi-open 880?  Shouldnt it be the otherway around cause open headphone leak bass?

The drivers itselfes are identical on 770/880/990, however, they differ in respect of their backwards coating, which influences "breathing" and consequently the tone.

The pads also make a huge difference as I pointed out in an earlier post.  I tried some black pads on my 990's and it changed the sound dramatically, killing the high end sparkle and making them sound dark and bassy.

The combination of the new frequency response graphs for the DT770/600 up on headroom, and beyer's drastically lowered prices for the DT990/600 manufakturs has me considering them over the 770s now.  I like a bit of extra bass as long as it doesn't compromise the rest of the sound and the black and chrome combo looks awesome.

Since people are asking about female vocals, how does it handle lower female vocals like for example, Nightwish? (The original Nightwish with Tarja Turunen.)  Are they smooth, silky, and pushed just a little further back, or are these not the phones for me if Nightwish is my favorite band?

I hope these sound as good as they look.  I'll have to wait another week to find out.

Right - the driver ASSEMBLIES are different - including what is behind the drivers.

The pads are vital, without them the 600ohms wouldn't sound this good. And DT990/600 have served me well with rock since I had them, for the price I don't think it's beatable, but you'll need a decent amp to run with it.

Proof positive that frequency response graphs don't tell the whole story.

My thoughts exactly!

Yup. Things like "transparency" and "grainlessness" are not frequency-reponse related.
