Why aren't Head-fi'ers more excited about the DT990/600?

Thin? Aren't they known for their phat bass?

I guess thin was the wrong word.  I meant it sounds like the audio is coming from far away.  They don't sound full-bodied.  The 880/600 puts you closer to the stage, whereas the 990 seats you a lot farther back.  But I also feel like the frequency response is awkward.  They just didn't sound right to me.  It's not that they are bad headphones though.

I still haven't had a chance to listen to the T1.  I definitely want to.  If it sounds like the DT880/600 or DT911 (which is a phone that's a decade and a half old, but even better than the 880/600) but even more refined, I'd really be interested in a pair.  They would have to be at least on par with the HD800 though for me to purchase them, but based on what I've read on the forum I'm not sure they are.

Another DT990 owner here.
People who say they have too much bass has never gone and heard a symphony orchestra play.

I have been to many symphonic concerts over the years. I used to even play in one, but for my tastes, the DT990' bass was in fact too much and more in line with the DT880 presentation. That's not to say the DT990s are bass canons, just slightly tipped too much towards the bass region.

What MacedonianHero said (only I CURRENTLY play in a large community orchestra that plays heavy-duty repertory, as well as going regularly to Cleveland Orchestra concerts.) The 990's bass (I've only heard the 250 ohm version) is clearly north of neutrality and I found that on some recordings it was enough to muddy the overall texture slightly. It was really the only thing I didn't like about them but it annoyed me enough that I sold them.

Can the 990s bass be compared to the M50s bass with better quality or does the M50 have more bass.
My 990s are on the way and I do like the M50s bass actually (sorry  )

The DT990/600 are good headphones and are a good fit for certain music styles and listener tastes - at this performance level there is relatively little right or wrong, just what your preference is.

To my ears, and especially incomparison with the HD650 and K702 that I have on hand, the mid-range on the DT990/600 is clearly recessed. Listening by itself one may not notice, especially because the mid-range quality is still very good with plenty of detail, but the difference in mid-range level is quite dramatic when switching between the three phones. The first thing that struck me about the DT990/600 is its exceptionally smooth and silky sounding, the accentuated bass and treble response also makes it very good for certain genres of music.  The treble on the DT990/600 can be a problem at times because it is just a little too much. I find it most objectionable within the first 5 minutes of listening. Eventually my ears gets used to it, but switching to the K702 make me realize immediately how much more artificial sizzle the DT990/600 was delivering.  I find myself listening to the K702 most of the time, but switches often to the HD650 and DT990 for specific songs.

Strong competition from other brands and models maybe?

these are very good rock cans when used with little dot mkII with ef92 mullards as driver tubes! tighter bass than before, with a thicker sound thats very sweet and detailed!

yes, swapping between the dt 880 and dt 990 also gives me an impression of recessed mids on the dt 990...

How are the highs on the DT990? I'm just wondering if the frequency response is V shaped like the GS1000s.

If so, I have to hear these..

The response is a little v-shaped, yes.  The DT990 have somewhat sparkly highs.

So the highs are sparkly, I am wondering how are the upper mids in particular with female vocals? The reason I ask is that I read in a thread on the Audio-GD fun this quote from Currawong:

Some music, especially with strong female vocals, when heard through headphones with a strong treble peak can be irritating to listen to. Regular Beyers I found could be very irritating with Norah Jones, period.

Anyone listening to for example trip-hop with the dt990s?

Never found the upper mids to be a problem in that way with the 990 - if anything, a but recessed, although this was one area that the 990/600 are much better than the 250 ohm version - much smoother treble and less recessed mids.
