Some K-701 haters have happily moved on to the HD-800, as well.

And I was happy with the K-701's bass.

Agreed, personally I think they're the most stylish design (maybe not the 701's since they're white... but the 702's definitely look pleasing to my eye)

Its all down to whats between the headphones though.. Really should listen before you buy if you can, if you can hear two cans that're supposidly on opposite ends of the scale from each other, you can give a fair call from there I suppose?

Personally i like the K701's more than HD650s (before, I thought I was a basshead -listening to trance, dnb & bass-laced jazz quite often) ..hehe... bass-laced... it rhymed..

It could just be a simple matter of volume, there's a lot more people that buy the K701s than other headphones. As far as the recent spate of sales, two new entrants might be making people thin the herd if they have multiple cans: the HF-2 and the HD800.

Yes! They sound natural and even all the way up. I hear a coloration in the K-701 that sounds unnatural to me. If it weren't for that, I'd be a huge fan. It was a disappointment because the older AKGs get that right.

So, what you saying is the K701 are more emphasized on the highs then the HD800?

I love the AKG 702 and a Phoenix ordered for it. For $250 for the k702 is a steal .... I think the Senn 800 balance might be the next phone to replace it but for now I rather spend the $1500 on a balance DAC.

Only biggest complaint of the K702 is the leather head bumps is giving me headaches. I use my daughter car seat belt pad on it, now it's very soft.

For bass, I will order a Denon AH7000 tomorrow.

I heard the AKG burn in 701 against the Senn 650 with the woo max 6se at cam jam. The AKG 701 sounded much better than the Senn 650. But I did enjoy the bass more on the 650.

A use AKG702 is still more that $200, I rather get it new.

How is that? considering the HD800 is 6-7 times more expensive. A lot here have the funds, but many more don't.

^^ the Q is why so many 701s for sale. i say part of the reason is that if you purchased an 800, you will in all likelihood sell your 701.

I think there are so many k701/k702 for sale because most people are too much affected by other people's opinions, and they think that if almost everybody here say they are bad/flawed then it's true.So they blindly trust all of them who blame these headphones, whether they like their headphones or not,and end up selling them.

I've audited K701 and HD 650 for about 1.5 hours and finally chose HD650. To me K701 is cleaner, faster, more transparent, but more plastic. I think as a mid-fi gear, they failed to please potential users to the extent that HD 650 have done.

just my own opinion though

like most questions there is no simple answer, but here's some of my ideas:

disappointment by noobies running these out of ipods or laptops (or portable amps even)

lacking sources

lack of bass

US recession

hd-800

a myriad of headphones being released

their ubiquity ( apopular headphone for sale new that has been around for many years would very likely be popular for resale too)

flavor of the month products require money to buy

Well, for 250$ I think the k701's are doing a fine job. I'm going to try the 800's next week, gonna be interesting.

Oh, and I think so many people sell the k701/2's because they DON'T THINK BEFORE THEY BUY. It need amplification, it needs a good source. And IMO it doesn't suit all kind of music, if you're a heavy grunge fan you wouldn't like these too much.
