Why are so many K701, 702 for sale?

Maybe,but if a pair of headphones are so incredibly difficult and picky with amplification,and able to sound well only with the very best equipment,they have failed miserably from the beginning.

Well put and correct.
Also, saying "you think these headphones suck because your system sucks" is the worst sort of condescension.
Trying to fix the ****ty performance of K701s with an upgraded amp and/or source is like trying to fix a severed jugular with a Bandaid.

Hehe, better equipment the K702 will just sound better. This will apply to most of the high end hps.
