Just thinking about what's IMO essential for a good phone and the word "soundstage" popped in my mind immediately. I soo hate the "in your head" effect most phones give you, I'd like some phones that'd give you the impression that the music comes from far far away (but keeps the clarity and impact of course).

The AKG K1000 are the nearest thing to a true soundstage I have heard. The Headroom Blockhead actually sounds closest to a loudspeaker system on my head,at least to My ears. The combo of crossfeed and a true dual-mono design are contributing factors.

Haven't heard the K1000, but the AKG K340 electrostatic/dynamic hybrid phones have an impressive sound stage.

If you applied your criteria to the K-1000, not all of them would hold. Yet, still, the K-1000 would come nearer than any other to matching.

While I dig the K1000, I would vote for the K501 or the AT W1000.

However, the 501s stage sounds a bit "contrived"...while the W1000s have a huge but "natural" sounding presentation.

I'll vote K-1000 also. It's still "in your head" to a degree, but it's got the biggest spatial presentation of any headphone I've heard. It's very weird listening to it in a room with other sounds occurring. It's openness creates the odd illusion that you're actually in two enviroments simultaneously.

ooops... I forgot to say best headphones for a reasonable price... The K 1000 is WAY past my budget.... so what would make a second-best then?

The 580's have a decent soundstage with a distant perspective and usually can be had for a decent price. I'm a firm believer that these require decent amplification and source though.

but are quite hard to find... The K501 are easy to find, and sometimes quite cheap used
