Hi,

I have RAL recabled K701s which I love (listening to it right now). I'm a real sucker for wide expansive soundstage which is why I settled on these phones. However, I've been hearing conflicting reports as to which has larger soundstage between it and the GS1000. Is it that the GS1000 has the larger soundstage but the K701 has the more "open" soundstage, i.e. out of the head, speaker-like imaging? Can anyone clear this up for me as to the relative size of the K701 and GS1000 soundstage and differences in presentation.

Opinions regarding the soundstage of other phones are also welcome.

From what I understand The Victor 1000 has a wider soundstage then both the cans you mentioned.. & are closed, which is pretty impressive.. The 701's soundstage felt unnatural, artificial, & 'forced'.. It's so wide & un attached you get lost & everything is 'out of reach'.. like getting a echo when screaming from atop a mountain. No sense of closeness more like a void of some sort.. Which some other headphones with a wide sound stage, can offer.. Ala, wide soundstage, & spacious but the music is still kept near the listener, along with the instruments in close proximity. So in a sense it feels 'cousy'. Even though you are aware of the wide soundstage, you don't say to yourself, this soundstage is huge..Meaning it doesn't stand out like a sore thumbs, Least was my opinion.

This.

Next closest is the K-501.

Best over all three axis soundstage imaging I've heard is the O2, best vertical soundstaging is the Ergo AMT, but it lacks the same depth capability. I havent had long enough with a K1000 or an HE60 to pass proper judgement on them. K1000 and the H2 are best for an external to the head sound source, which is probably what the OP is actually looking for. I don't like the K701 much at all.

I'd say K1000, than K701/340 in about the same level (K340's has better imaging though).

I've owned both the K701 and Gs1000, briefly at the same time, although only powered (at that time) with a portable amp; under those conditions, the GS1000 soundstage was way better than the K701.

Of the phones I own I would rank them this way for sound stage. I plan on picking up some GS1000 at some point but just have a lot on my plate.

This is best to worst

K1000>W5000>K701>D5000>DT880>02>K240 Sextett>K340>HD-650

I would say the last three are all pretty close.

I have both and the GS-1000 has a wider...more richer in soundstage than the K701, so the GS-1000 has better soundstage than the K701.

But the K1000 is wwaaayyy out of this world when it comes to soundstage.
