My recollections aren't that detailed. Certainly in terms of size (both sideways and back-to-front) the GS1000 was better, but imaging, I couldn't say.

This.

Next closest is the K-501.

I'd say the next closest would be the W5000s. The AT's come very, very close to the K1000. Also, I'd imagine that the CD3000 would also best the K-501 in regards to soundstage as well. But I'll know for sure next week when they arrive.

My vote goes to the SR-007.
Mind that I have not heard the K1000. But of those I have heard its a clear winner.

From the ones I tried (see sig) easily the CD3000 (that's why I had to have it). I don't regard the K1000 as a headphone though, rather as near field monitor.

Between these two, the GS1000 gets my vote for the better, more expansive soundsstage. I didn't do a real in-depth comparison, but I noticed that listening to my GS1000's after having listened to my K701's, I remember thinking that the GS1K did everything the 701's did, only better. Bigger, better and more precise soundstage; high frequencies that had more shimmer and life to them, and a more solid, controlled and tight low end.

The GS1K's are better, but they cost three times as much as the 701's. If your budget allows it, the Grado. If not, the AKGs will be just fine. They're both excellent cans.

FWIW, I drove both cans (during the stage I was doing a quick comparison) with the PS Audio headamp. Powerful, clean and razor-sharp in the detail department. Did I mention powerful, clean and razor-sharp?

As in all things audio, YMMV.

I have both. Both are fantastic. GS-1000 wins for soundstage.
