And the other ones that you have now: are they ones you upgraded to after selling others on your "had" list, or were they ones that you owned along with the ones that you sold, but have kept this whole time? (I'm assuming that wouldn't be the case for the D5000, though, since it's relatively new, right?)

TP,
The multiple sales and reclamations reflect a migratory path with various sources, amps, cables, etc.

Settling on the K501 is due to better system matching and getting to better know/understand my listening tastes over time. These, if anything, will be keepers. I've had this pair for about 6-8 months.

The DT880/2003 were the headphones I most regretted having sold, and a set of headphones I really hadn't taken the time to fully appreciate. So they're back in hand, and on head, to more fully appreciate--and appreciate them even more this time around, I do. I've had this pair for about 3-4 months.

The AH-D5000 are the culmination of bringing together all the best traits of the headphones that have gone before, a sort of (temporary) endpoint or summit of my ongoing search; like Homo sapiens along the evolutionary trail. I've had this pair for about 4-5 months.

The SR-80 are my "fun 'phones" at work, the "default Grados" that find their way into everyone's collection sooner or later. I've had this pair for about 1-2 months.

Just picked up the K240, a set of headphones I've wanted to try for quite awhile now. These are in the mail as we speak! : )

I started out at Head-Fi with a Shure e3c, a Sony MDR-V6 and a Sennheiser HD-650.

I gave away the MDR-V6, but I'm thinking about getting another. Everything else I've kept, save for a spare DT48 I sold. I have two other pairs, so I don't miss them.

While I've kept almost all the headphones, I've sold a few sources and amps. Might upgrade the digital source some day, but I plan to keep the rest for the long haul.

Wow! All these responses are great! Thanks!

However, I think it would be nice, and more beneficial to the community, to see a comparison of these lists with some insight as to why the phones that are in the "have" group are there, as well as why those that are in the "had" group are no longer.

If we can have an idea of what the particular goal was in each person's personal audio journey, and whether(/why) they believe they were able to meet that goal with their current phones, I think it could be a great help to those who might be looking for the same goal. And since, I'm sure, many of these "have" lists include different phones which are attempts at meeting different goals, maybe it would suffice to simply have a comparison between one set of "have" phones which get close to that goal and other "had" phones which didn't meet up to expectations.

I think this would give readers an idea of which phones "may" help them reach that goal, as well as which phones "may" not help, no?

They crushed my skull and sounded pretty dry and blah to me. Very different from the W5000 and other ATs I've listened to (W11JPN, L3000, W2002).

not my experience at all with AD2Ks - and I had to do tons of headband stretching. AD1K had lots of dryness though.\

hey, this might be the first time you and I had serious posts exchanged. Ever.
